Question What do you do when you decide you like a different genera?

Uh oh. I've been bitten...by...the....Phrag...bug.

What do you do when you start to like a new or different genera?

Do you start looking for ways to make room in the greenhouse or look at chids that you want to get rid of?

My preorder for the May show is getting really long and I am going to have to make some serious decisions and clear out some chids.

Maybe I'll donate a bunch of stuff to the MAOC silent auction!!!

I make room, and try and keep the newbies hidden from my other half. But beware, you are bound to get caught when the room overflows...

So far I just buy a few, rearrange the shelves to make room and wish I had a green house.

See where more room can be had and reassess what I currently have. Those plants that are nice but don't really rock my world I try to sell off or, better yet, trade for plants I do want.

If you are closer, I would say, "Come and get mine.". My phrags are suffering.

I used to grow paphs and phrags. I got bitten by "vanda" bug. My old collections are not doing well.

This actually happened to me.

When I first started growing orchids I bought a little bit of everything., but mostly phals.

I eventually ended up giving most of my orchids away and concentrating on very few types. I'd say 99.99 percent of my collection is catt alliance. I'm not going to stray much further out than that.

Cull, cull, cull!!!

Unfortunately I have not culled out the plants I lost interest in as I should.

Like Peewee, I started with pretty much anything I could get my hands on. As I developed my interests, I couldn't let go of those early plants and like Naoki, the old ones are relegated to the inaccessible back corners and are not in their prime. To add insult to injury, just about the time my wife convinces me I need to just let go, the Phals and Dendrobiums decide to spite me with a bloom. So then here is this sad, tatty looking plant with this nice bloom spike sitting in the middle of the kitchen table. It's not a pretty sight.

Cheers.
Jim

Fortunately I don't have a space problem and just add it to the collection. Living in S. Florida makes orchid growing much easier.

You should only get rid of repeats and your least favourite orchids. You can't replace what you have otherwise you might regret it latter when you remember how cool the other genera were.
So, never get rid of anything unique
or anything you only have 1 of.

I try to make room. My collection is relatively small so it's not difficult to make room. Although with phrags I might be a little hard pressed to find room, unless they are the smaller ones. But, there is plenty of room in this house for orchids!! I have a bedroom that stays cooler than the rest of the house, no matter the season, soooooo Masdies!!
