Default The weather in central Texas this morning

Wow, we received a sizable amount of snow, especially for this area. I just wanted to share some pictures...not much else. Everything in the area is pretty much closed and folks around here really don't know proper driving etiquette for snow or ice, so I am staying put and taking pictures! I've been here long enough that I, too, am probably a bad driver in this weather.

Ha, that's kind of how I feel. I learned how to drive in the northeast. I felt like the only one who knew what he was doing on my way into work this morn.

What's the bloom in the photo?

SLC. Jewel Box "Dark Waters". It's got two pseudobulbs with two blooms each. I love it!
Glad you made it in. Did you guys get some of this?
I learned to drive in the panhandle of Texas where we got snow every year and, frequently, lots of it! My husband got out early this morning, hoping to beat the crazies. He drove a few miles, said he watched a guy slam on his brakes and then slam into the curb. At that point, he knew that, despite his skill, the lack of skill in this area had him beat. He promptly and SLOWLY turned around and came home.

Nice! That is one thing that I miss about the 'Dark Waters' cultivar. It always was in bloom for me on Valentine's Day.

Ted,
Is Dark Waters your avatar pic? Whatever it is sure is pretty!

My Dark Waters barely survived my early culture practices. This is the second year it's bloomed for me. I have had it at least 10 years! It smells wonderful and it has taught me quite a bit over the years about catt. hybrid care. I am grateful I learned in time!!

Hi Vanessa! My avatar is Jewel Box 'Scheherazade'. In my teens I had 'Dark Waters' and was very prolific. When I got it it was in a 3" pot. Three years later it filled a 12" pot with at least 15 leads. It was a beautiful sight in bloom.

Besides cultivar name, what's the most obvious visual (or other sensory) difference between dark waters and Scheherezade?

I think Scheherezade is a heftier plant but still compact. What I mean it is slightly larger. But it does not seem to be as prolific as 'Dark Waters'. The flowers are larger(4.5" NS), rounder, and fuller. Its color a scarlet red and is a concolor with not much of a scent. This one puts out up to 5 flower per inflorescence for me. Blooms around Mother's Day.

Now for 'Dark Waters'. It breaks new leads effortlessly. The flowers are a dark red and up to 3.5" NS with a maximum of 4 flowers per inflorescence, 2s and 3s being more the norm. It has a spicy scent. For me it was always in bloom for Valentine's Day.
