You know what? I have a question about the whole "the natural world is disappearing at a tragic rate" idea.

I realize that we are deforesting way too much, but how bad is it. Really. Certain places are bad, but to think that so much undeveloped land exists in Japan....? Europe? I'm sure Australia and Asia. Africa. And I can tell you first hand, most of the US is wild as well.

All we ever see on television are places like Los Angeles or New York. We see places like Sydney and Bejing. And we think, damn, that's ugly.

All I have read about is how when you fly over the Amazon at night, you see the lights from slashing and burning, and researches have told me that whole tracts of forest are wiped out from one year to the next. Basically, I think we are at a point where there is still a lot of wilderness, but at the rate we are taking it, it will be gone very soon. Is a world full of reserves and parks really what we want for the future? I don't, I want a world full of ancient forests large beyond count.

I really agree with Tindo here. It's not the industrialized nations that count in this discussion at all. It's the fact the the Amazon Basin is the largest tract of "jungle" on the earth. It's what is happeneing there that makes the big difference, not our miniscule parks. Yet the indutrialized nations are the biggest contributors to excessive CO2 and Co on earth. Not enough plants left to use all that stuff yet we insist on making more! That's what one of the major topics of G8 was about. Sorry to divert the post.

That is so neat , I wonder what the purpose of the umbrella leaves are? to catch water? or to keep it away from the roots . Or are the way they are Gin

I can't help but to think that they would collect water and funnel it down to the roots.
