Do you cull your plants ?
How many of us cull our plants ?the ones we can't give away cause they look like crap take up space and don't bloom. Do you trash them ? keep them hanging around ? Or troll the parking lot at wal -mart looking for an open window to slip them into

Mother nature did that for me already. She destroyed pretty much all of my collection. I trashed my dying and dead plants out of mercy.
I always say a little prayer for the trashed plants, and thank them for being in my collection. There are some that I think would have been better off without me.

I one of the hopeless saviors that will not intentionally kill any plant if it doesn't give me a rash.

I used to hold on as long as I could. Now that I'm out of room, I'm getting better at letting go. A few go into the trash but I like to experiment with them. I'll stick them out in full sun, leave them out in freezing temps, no water, etc. I figure I might as well observe the effects of extreme conditions on plants that I'm done with anyway. I've even tossed one (virused, I think) on the bonfire.

what happens to the ones that do make you break out in hives???
I don't kill anything deliberately either, but I have been known to "forget" a plant until nature took it to the Big Garden in the Sky - sometimes you just know you can't save it no matter how hard you try. Others I have sold for a song to my local gardening club - duplicates mainly. But they have to be in good condition and preferably in flower.....

Hehe... I believe that they all ultimately want to grow and prosper for exception of some suicidal orchids i have encountered. I keep them till i find somebody willing to swap for their "runts of the litter". Perhaps giving them different conditions, i mean a different grower, will give them better prospect for living.
BTW i still have some room left

I give my 'I hate you' plants away. They don't grow for me, but for someone else they may do fine. I go through my group in early Spring and late Fall and see who isn't progressing and pass them on. The recipients know that they are not doing well for me. In many instances, the reciever has success with them. Just a change in conditions - they like them better than me. I learn more of what I can grow and what I can't and they gain the same knowledge (not always do they succeed either, but spares them investing in an 'I hate you' plant).

Do you cull your plants?
I have not gotten around to that yet....and with good reason. I have a Brassavola hybrid (lost the tag) that would give me one bloom once in a while. This past summer I was thinking of finding it a new home. It must have read my mind because it is now in the process of blooming with 10 or more spikes. (I don't know the exact number because I don't want to take it down and disturb it). So, I'll either kill them or bloom them one way or another.

I was thinking of poison oak when I wrote that. It is about the only plant that makes me break out. That gets one heck of a dose of Round Up from me!!!

I still keep all of them until they are completely and 100% dead. However I can see that in the future if/when my collection has expanded to the point of being only just managable then I would probably start culling the less fulfilling ones in favour of new plants.
