I too love reading all these stories about the beginnings of orchidaholic-ness! Funny to see how a lot of relationships start with 1 orchid that was bought for the heck of it.
I got my first orchid in spring 2006. I was studying horticulture and my school would sell plants in a section of one of the greenhouses. I got a pink Cymbidium which made several beautiful spikes. After that I didn't think much more about orchids for another 2 years, which is when I got a phal (an equestris hybrid) for the heck of it. A friend saw the plant and tore a bulb off an Onc she had (both of us didn't even know much about it other than it was an orchid).
So I found myself with this nearly rootless single bulb and in my search for information on what to do with the thing, I landed on Orchidboard. And THAT is what truely started the orchid addiction! I now have 50 or so orchids, and I'm preparing an order for another 5-6 from a German grower.
The Cym and Phal are still alive and blooming, but the Onc bulb (as could be expected) died.
