As for the quote, I thought it was an appropriate quote for a plant forum (deep roots are not reached by the frost) even though its meaning really has nothing to do with plant.

Ah, probably why I missed it. I have the unfinished tales but after getting stuck on The Silmarilian I never actually read it. Maybe I should one of these days. I still intend to finish The Silmarilian as I love to know the history behind these things.

So what part of the Sil are you on? Have you read the story of Beren and Luthien yet? Thats my favourite part.

No, I've just checked and my bookmark is ch 15 and Beren and Luthien is ch 19. I'll have to get restarted reading this because this talk has wetted my appetite for it again.

It's a lot of fun and very relaxing.... slower pace, leave the cells phones and computers and the rat race behind, everyone is polite, and the balls on Saturday night are great!
I also did American Revolution reenacting for a while too; 1st Battallion, Maryland Loyalists (Yes, a Redcoat). That was fascinating. I learned so much! My persona was a former general store owner who was driven to fighting for the Crown because "Patriots" burned down my house and business because I continued to sell British goods and didn't actively and openly support Independence. This actually happened a lot.
Cheers.

I'm in the same boat. But for some reason, could never finish the book.
PS if you guys are fans of fantasy, check out RR Martins "ice and fire" series

I'd love to be a Red Coat. I dreamt I was one when I was 4 years old. At the time I had never heard of Red Coats but I had seen myself in the very same uniform on the streets of Queens New York (surroundings were time era appropriate, and I confirmed the whole thing when I saw a picture of the same spot in the library a few years ago). Oh and I was "fresh of the boat" from Colombia at the time, so I KNOW I had not seen it in school yet. Spooky kinda.
