Umm...well my husbands support has gone through phases. Initially he thought it was neat, then he started to worry about the size of the collection, so I organized it better, then he was okay for awhile, then we got a new house and a big yard to fill with orchids and he was worried again. When he expressed his concern I pointed out the fact that I do not spend my spare money on anything but chids. So long as I pay my bills and am not going into debt buying chids I say its a-okay!
He has learned that I am a much happier person when I have had R&R time with my orchids anyway. He no likey me grumpy!
I say don't get more chids than you find enjoyable. If it isn't fun anymore whats the point?

no going back
I'm convinced that orchids are intelligent. Too intelligent.!
Perhaps they have summons us into their world-wide propagation strategy, using us to multiply and expand.
I went from a manageable 20 or so "house-plant additions" to 250 (all grown in the house) in a year. This is a ten-fold expansion I can not logically explain. I feel as if I have been seduced by a master seductress. Granted, I am a willing to be subordinate to this strange impulse, yet, at times I feel I allocate an inordinate amount of time, attention, and love energy to these weird and wonderful beings. I have no rational explanation for this behavior, and I need none in clearer moments. I Love Orchids.
A wise friend suggested it is a "passive" outlet for my sexual addictiveness... and perhaps he is correct. All I know is I'm smitten and irretrievably beyond hope for redemption. Bring me the next plant!

I too find myself in the 30 - 40 in-house orchid sweet spot. Windowsills are full, sunny corners, light shelves.... the whole lot.
It's a matter of finding the time to properly care for them. Mornings, evenings and weekends mostly. It's a real labor of love for me.

My colletion is in the house and hovers between 80-85 orchids. That's really a bit much for me to manage. I work full time so don't have time to fuss with them during the work week. That leaves the weekend. It takes me all of one day to get everything watered and fertilized let alone deal with repotting requirements in the spring. If I could get it down to 70-75 it would be much more manageable. Has that stopped me from buying orchids? For the most part it has, though I will admit to recently buying a teeny Restrepia division from a society friend for $5.

I've not grown my collection as quickly as some, but the influence of OB on me buying more has been huge.
I had just one for 2 years then came here looking for help and now have 56 and I've killed a few along the way as well.
My hubby has just accepted that there is no point fighting it I now get him to choose one or two of them so he feels involved, and he even knows the names of some of them.
Watering is always a problem with lots. I found that I could manage them best by altering my patten and NOT carrying everyone to the sink to water, but watering and draining them in place. For some reason I've gone back to carrying every one to the sink and I've been struggling to keep them all watered recently and need to go back to a faster method.

What's funny about that is I have a small window near my front door that I told my husband this morning would be perfect for a mini!
