when i stopped OB, i didnt buy a single plant for a long time, the i cam back, and i loved it and love my plants even more. but i didnt leave b/c of the buying plants thing
i think that OB has alot to do with it, not only does it expose us to more species, it also has loads of great info. but most importantly there are people here who are just as crazy as me thats why i love it here

Barbie,
I have a modest collection of about 49. With about 10 more once dividing is done. It is not hard keeping track of them.
You end up putting them anywhere you find room that light and temperature levels are close to their needs.
As far as affording them goes... Picking up a plant or two here and there usually wont break the bank. Plus when you have a surplus of a particular variety you can trade, sell, or give a few here and there.
Caring for them come pretty easy once you understand thier needs and make sure you schedule time and it does not become a chore.
My wife has been very supportive. She has helped with them when I was away for a long while.

You get a few here and there the years go by they become family members you get older You learn to make taking care of them easy. I have a green house , water with a submersible pump in a 33 gal trash can of rain water . Plant names are in a data base , not counted them lately last time I did it was about 300 .. But that was a couple of years ago my husband likes them and is supportive of my addiction built the green house for me .. I raise birds to support my Orchid hobby .

You are a helpless victim so just submit!
Modest collection of 40? Really?
OAA? There is no such group
and I repeat Lesson#1 as in another OB post: Buying orchids is a guiltless act!

I too find myself in the 30 - 40 in-house orchid sweet spot. Windowsills are full, sunny corners, light shelves.... the whole lot.
It's a matter of finding the time to properly care for them. Mornings, evenings and weekends mostly. It's a real labor of love for me.

My colletion is in the house and hovers between 80-85 orchids. That's really a bit much for me to manage. I work full time so don't have time to fuss with them during the work week. That leaves the weekend. It takes me all of one day to get everything watered and fertilized let alone deal with repotting requirements in the spring. If I could get it down to 70-75 it would be much more manageable. Has that stopped me from buying orchids? For the most part it has, though I will admit to recently buying a teeny Restrepia division from a society friend for $5.

I've not grown my collection as quickly as some, but the influence of OB on me buying more has been huge.
I had just one for 2 years then came here looking for help and now have 56 and I've killed a few along the way as well.
My hubby has just accepted that there is no point fighting it I now get him to choose one or two of them so he feels involved, and he even knows the names of some of them.
Watering is always a problem with lots. I found that I could manage them best by altering my patten and NOT carrying everyone to the sink to water, but watering and draining them in place. For some reason I've gone back to carrying every one to the sink and I've been struggling to keep them all watered recently and need to go back to a faster method.
