Tree Walkers International (TWI) is putting on
MICROCOSM 2010 on September 3-4...which is just a couple weeks away! The event is taking place at the Embassy Suites in Lynnwood, WA, about 15-20 minutes north of Seattle.
Inspired by the Victorian crazy of Wardian cases, terrariums, aquariums (i.e. "glass boxes") we are bringing together all hobbyists who practice the cultivation of plants and animals within such enclosures...and exploring the ways in which captive cultivation can play a role in actual conservation of species and their habitats.
Friday (Sept 3) will kick off with a natural history field trip into the Cascades (Index and Skykomish areas) to look for numerous species of amphibians and reptiles and all things green and mossy(
preregistration is required for this event)--unfortunately it will be too late in the season to find most, if any, native orchids. That evening back at the Embassy Suites is a
Herpetological Lecture Series featuring John E. Simmons and Mark Pepper. The lecture Series is FREE and open to the public.
Saturday (Sept 4) is the vendor show from 10:00am-4:00pm at the Embassy Suites and will feature reptiles, amphibians, bromeliads, orchids, tropical fish and invertebrates, aquatic plants, custom terrariums and aquariums, carnivorous plants and more. Throughout the day on Saturday there will be various
lectures and workshops, which are free upon paid admission into the show. Also, beginning at 3:00 pm you'll be able to redeem your ticket for a free drink...and at 4:00 pm we will begin our live auction with all proceeds going to TWI's amphibian conservation programs.
The conference halls each night will be open until 12 midnight to allow plenty of opportunities for discussions and socializing. The bar & grill at the Embassy Suites is also open and serving food until then...so everything you need can be found there.
On
Sunday, Sept 5 locals Todd Kelley and Christina Hanson (who have a wonderful cool-climate greenhouse in their backyard with a great collection of Pleurothallids and Bulbophyllums and a neotropical frog room in their house) are generously opening up their home and hosting a BBQ (starting at 12 noon) for those who are still in town and would like to get together (PM me for directions and details).
This is looking to be a great event! If you are interested in attending or vending, click on the link to the website above and you can find all the relevant information and online forms.
Hope to see you there!
