I cant believe that I have not seen this thread before!! Its sooo cool to see everyone's faces!! This pic is actually from a few years ago and is the only one I could find of myself that would be appropriate for OB:blushing: :blushing: Anyway, this is a 764 lb blue marlin I caught off the Kona Coast when I was still living on the Big Island (aka the Orchid Isle!). I was a little pudgy at the time but I think I needed all the weight I could muster to haul that giant in!!

razka3 03-31-2008 10:17 PM

That's a really big fish....

Rivals the ones I've seen in Alaska fishing derbies.

quiltergal 03-31-2008 11:27 PM

Steve we were in Kona 2 years ago when the Billfish Tournament was going on. It was fun to watch the boats take off every morning at 7. We walked down to the dock every evening to see what had been caught. Saw a couple that came in @ about 1K lbs. Those are pretty amazing fish.

Ah, I really want a GSX-R 750... I don't even think they make them anymore.

Oh, just checked and looks like they came out with a new one for 2008. Thought they stopped that line back in '04.

elibrown81 04-01-2008 01:29 PM

well, I guess I'll join the unmasking. This is my token artistic b/w

This thread has exposed an interesting pattern. It seems like a rather large number of us are not only Orchid fanatics, but also share photography as a hobby. In fact from reading through older posts, some of us are quite well educated in the art. I am certainly not as well taught/educated about photography as some here seem to be, however I do share the interest. This makes me wonder, why photography and Orchids? Aside from the obvious (wanting to take good pics of your blooms) why are so many of us attracted to growing as well as shooting?

As for me, orchids make a great subject for photography. About 1/2 of my 3/4 terrabytes of pictures is flora of some sort. The biggest folder under flora is orchids. Second biggest is cacti. I grow both. I also get a portion of my retirement income from my photography.

Tindomul 04-01-2008 01:40 PM

Thats an interesting question. My interest in photography began when I started keeping frogs in terrariums. At first my subjects were my frogs, but then I realized that the living plants in my terrariums where also good subjects. Terrariums also led me straight into the orchid hobby and boom, I do what I can with my little camera. Now photography has shown itself necessary with my research with plant fossils for grad school and my field courses (ex: ornithology, plant systematics etc...).
I should take a photography course.

Hooking a "grander" is my next goal for fishing!! I would have loved to see one of those fish pushing 1000lbs.

I have to say, its a darn fine looking largemouth bass!! On light tackle they can definitely feel like a 700lb marlin!!

Do it, Tindo. You won't regret it.

gixrj18 04-01-2008 06:30 PM

Your pocket might regret it....if there's one thing that will put a serious dent in your orchid funds, it's photo equipment. But it is very interesting!

i wanted to resurrect this thread. we have a lot of new members and a few that didn't show their pics:evil:

Hey Alaskagirl and Roly! Glad to see a face to go with your name. Great shots, all of them! :)

William 09-15-2008 05:44 PM

I entered my shots a while ago but Alskagirl, where did the name come from? I recently answered a thread about where we were from and I wondered if anyone raised orchids in Alaska but got no takers. I freaked when I saw your name but too bad.... I see you're in Florida too.

Ummm...I never noticed this thread before.

I guess i'll go ahead and post one. Here I am last April (08). I usually don't take too good a photo, but seeing how everyone else has stepped up, I figure that I will too. This is the best one I've got. :)

alaskagirl 09-15-2008 06:50 PM

I was born and raised in Alaska, but moved to Florida almost 4 years ago. I never had any orchids in Alaska :) I only know of one grower/greenhouse up there. Also I haven't been on the Orchid Board for too long, maybe a month. Guess I must have missed your other post! Any questions about Alaska, just let me know :) I'm an open book!

William 09-16-2008 06:03 AM

I've been there twice. My son was in Tok, I visited and fell in love. I drove from Florida to Alaska Two years ago to fish the Russian river and I may go next year. Of course I took the cowardly way out(went in the summer).
