Phal type Dendrobiums will sometimes send out a replacement spike on the same cane within a few days to a couple of weeks. Watch for bumps at nodes near the tip or right beside the base of the broken spike. You might get lucky if you have a Phal type. I don't know if this happens with the deciduous varieties.

I'm always so worried I will do that. I haven't yet but really it's just a matter of time before I do.
I did drop my Den loddigesii on the floor this morning... bark flying everywhere. Luckily I think the plant is OK, but I swore loudly... and I'm not someone who swears except with extreme provocation.

It does happen to most of us at one point or another. At least it was not your only spike on that plant.
