Talking 14 Hours in the Greenhouse Yesterday / SPIKES!

So I've been ignoring the GH for a couple of weeks (depressed from killing my Phaiocalanthes).

I finally pulled myself out of the slump and with renewed determination, headed out to the GH yesterday for some maintenance.

I inspected every plant, repotted a few, watered those that needed water, updated some tags, took notes on the spiking chids and cleaned every nook and cranny.

As a reward for my "tender loving care," the chids decided to throw out some spikes for me.

Here is the list...today's project is to take some pictures.

Phal Hugo - 1 spike
Phal/Dtps Noid - 1 spike
Phal/Dtps Noid - 2 spikes (3rd may be a root?)
Dtps Casablanca Joy x Phal Taisuco Kalaadian - 1 spike
Phal Mountain Gold x Carmela's Wonder - 5 spikes
Bulb medusae 'Miami' CCM/AOS - blooming
Phrag Sorcerer's Fire - blooming and 3rd bud working
Diaca Chantilly Lace 'Sprinkles' - 1 spike
Den Waianae Valley 'Ruffles' - 3 spikes
Den Princess x Gold Star 'Orange Royal' - 25 spikes
Den Taskin Utopai x Taskin Mary Caine - 5 spikes
Den Oriental Smile 'Fantasy' AD/AOS - 6 spikes
Den Princess x unicum - 10 spikes

Photos.

Excuse the condition of the phals/dtps as they were rescues.

Are they soda bottles I see you using for S/H? What a good and inexpensive idea! Also does anyone know where I can buy the sort of Leca you guys in the states use - over here I have so far only been able to find a dry dusty baked clay ball that is smaller than a marble called J. Arthur Bowers Hydroleca?

Hi Hedge,

Mine are smaller than marbles too (some are close to marble size). I use Hydroton which is available locally at Sun City Hydroponics (YAY-no shipping).

I get a 40 lb (or so-can't quite remember) for $32 plus 8.25% tax so just under $35 total.

Karen

Hi Karen, I have found that to be the case. I tend to fiddle with them too much and end up killing or setting them back.

I find that if I get them in the right place in the GH and the right watering schedule, just leave them be and they'll do their thing.

These Dens have been winter resting for about 2 months with no water, just spritzing, and no fertilizer. They are in the northwest corner of the GH under T5 lights and a radio transmitter thermometer. They've been holding steady at approximately 58-60 at night and 67 day with heaters (except during the really cold nights {28 outside} the best my heaters can do is 53-54when it gets that cold. Any colder and I have to break out the Charcoal Grill backup).

Of course I can't count the chickens until the blooms actually open...but I'm hoping.
