1. How old are you? 26
2. How long have you been growing orchids? 3 years
3. Are you in school or working? law student
4. Are you a member of your LOS? yes

If your nearest LOS...

1. had a monthly e-Newsletter would you subscribe to it? Yes, it automatically goes out to all the members
2. had orchid how-to videos on youtube would you watch them? yes
3. had a facebook page would you become a fan of it? No, I don't use facebook much anymore. I think it's more important to have a current website since that's how I found my LOS. It would never have occurred to me to check facebook.
4. had a flickr group would you join it? Probably
5. had a twitter account would you follow them? No, don't use twitter
6. had their own forum would you participate on it? Maybe
7. had an RSS feed of orchid articles would you subscribe to it? Yes
8. sold orchids on craigslist would you buy them? Probably not

Would you be more inclined to join/rejoin your nearest LOS if they...

1. offered free membership for students? Sure, but it's not that expensive as is
2. offered free membership for anyone under 30? No, and it doesn't seem fair to the older members, including the 31 year olds
3. received a 10% discount at local orchid nurseries? yes
4. received a 20% discount at local orchid nurseries? yes
5. received a 30% discount at local orchid nurseries? yes
6. offered tours of their members' greenhouses/gardens? Yes, I also like the field trips my LOS takes to some of the farther flung nurseries

On a scale of 1 (least important) to 10 (most important) how would you rate the following items...

1. a good selection of reasonably priced orchids for sale at every meeting 8
2. a good selection of raffle orchids 7
3. weekend meetings 1, I have to travel most weekends
4. more young members 5
5. knowledgeable members 10
6. friendly members 10
7. interesting presentations 9
8. an extensive orchid library 7

Please feel free to offer any specific reasons why you haven't joined your LOS or why you continue to be a member of your LOS.

I decided to join my LOS after attending their annual show. I was really impressed by the presentations/classes they gave and the friendliness of all the members I met.

Old thread, but I'll play any way!

The following is a survey for youngish (<40 yrs old) orchid growers regarding their nearest Local Orchid Society (LOS). As the publicity person for my society I figure the answers might be helpful for the leaders of societies. Thanks in advance for your participation!

How old are you? 36 in three weeks
How long have you been growing orchids? 2.5 years actively, tried in the past without success
Are you in school or working? currently yes I'm working, but not sure about the future as my health is getting bad
Are you a member of your LOS? not yet, I just found them about an hour ago!

If your nearest LOS...

had a monthly e-Newsletter would you subscribe to it? yes I can read it online
had orchid how-to videos on youtube would you watch them? yes I have watched them and will continue
had a facebook page would you become a fan of it? yes
had a flickr group would you join it? no I'm not on flickr
had a twitter account would you follow them? same as flickr
had their own forum would you participate on it? yes if it was fairly active
had an RSS feed of orchid articles would you subscribe to it? ? sorry I'm not sure what this is???
sold orchids on craigslist would you buy them? most likely yes

Would you be more inclined to join/rejoin your nearest LOS if they...

offered free membership for students? doesn't apply
offered free membership for anyone under 30? doesn't apply
received a 10% discount at local orchid nurseries? we really don't have any, but we have a grocery store/garden center and if they did maybe
received a 20% discount at local orchid nurseries? we really don't have any, but we have a grocery store/garden center and if they did yes
received a 30% discount at local orchid nurseries? we really don't have any, but we have a grocery store/garden center and if they did in a heartbeat!
offered tours of their members' greenhouses/gardens? that would be cool!

On a scale of 1 (least important) to 10 (most important) how would you rate the following items...

a good selection of reasonably priced orchids for sale at every meeting realistically maybe 5, if I had money, then 10!
a good selection of raffle orchids 4
weekend meetings 10
more young members 5
knowledgeable members 9
friendly members 10
interesting presentations 8
an extensive orchid library 6

Please feel free to offer any specific reasons why you haven't joined your LOS or why you continue to be a member of your LOS.

As of right now my 2 local chapters that I found this am are over an hour away from my house, in each direction. I don't think I can join (ok I can join, but not get to meetings) because of the distance. I have health issues that makes being in the car miserable. If there was one closer to me I'd be there every month. I really want to join to get more info and see like minded people in my area. Age is of no concern, friendliness is what matters most!

Where they meet is too far for me to drive, over an hour and a half away. I'd love to join, help set up for the show, ect. My parents wouldn't approve of me joining because it's far to drive, gas costs me money, and they don't know the people.

I feel ours does a pretty good job. They almost always have a vendor there, and the presentations are usually very interesting although I do understand what I like the next person may not. For me. I originally didn't see any benefit to joining as this forum is wonderful. But meeting the people, having access to knowledgeable people and being able to quickly discuss things has been key. The friendliness of everyone was also greatly appreciated!

- I am seventeen, but will be eighteen next month
- I started growing in late October/early November, so about two months
- I'm a student (high school senior)
- I'm not a member of any of my local orchid societies, but my mother and I are looking into it

- I probably would subscribe to a monthly e-Newsletter so I can learn more about the plants I grow

- If the orchid societies in my area had orchid how-to videos I would most definitely watch them

- If they had a facebook page I'd most definitely become a fan of it

- I don't use flickr, so probably not

- I don't use twitter, so probably not

- If they had a forum I would participate on it.

- If they had an RSS feed of orchid articles I'd subscribe to it

- Definitely, I never see orchids of any kind for sale on craigslist in my area

- I know they offer discounted membership for students, but since most of my money goes to my orchids, I'd definitely join if it was free

- I'd be interested once I graduate from college, but I know the societies in my area need the membership money to keep doing what they do

- I just wish there were more orchid nurseries in Phoenix, AZ, but yeah I'd be more inclined to join if there were discounts (of any percentage) at local orchid nurseries

- I think they already do tours of greenhouses/gardens in my area, but yeah I'd be interested

- Considering my best sources of non-NoID orchids are the orchid societies, this one gets a 10

- A good prize is always what draws me to raffles (even if I have horrible raffle luck), so yeah (10)

- Weekend meetings are an absolute must (10)

- I wish there were more people around my age that were that into orchids 10

- As a newcomer to orchids, I'm kinda reliant on the advice of more knowledgeable growers, so definitely a 10

- It's hard for me to get along with people that are unfriendly or intolerant of rookies (and their mistakes), so friendly members is a definite 10

- Interesting presentations are a must (10)

- An extensive orchid library would be nice (8)

I have just moved here and don't yet speak the language so I haven't considered joining a LOS. Also I have heard that people are kind of, how to put that, very “snob” about their orchids. Of course I can't say if that's true until trying myself.
Great would be if their website was bilingue french/english.

What I would love of a LOS is if there was a service of flasking your seeds!!!

I haven't joined my local orchid society because I feel like I would stick out so much being young and that I wouldn't fit in.
