friendly atmosphere
As my life has gotten busier, I want to stay at this forum. It has a friendly atmosphere. People tend not to take things too seriously. But you can have nerdy discussion if you want too.

I bought my first orchid in Omaha, in 1999, an ondontobrassia keven bivens. I got hooked, bought a few more, and proceded to kill the lot through ignorance. I moved to New Mexico last year, and suddenly I started to buy a few orchids. As soon as I had about 5, I realized the book advice was not answering my questions, so I decided to look for a forum of like minded people. Over the years when I become interested in something, I have made it a habbit to go to a forum. Now my number is up to 20, but since I amsaving for a house, I will not be collecting hundreds any time soon.

Why did I join Orchid Board?
I needed a place where I could go and babble about orchids without feeling that my OCD was getting away with me.

I have been researching orchids that I'm interested in, and this site always had the best information! I tend to treat my plants, whether orchids or not, just as I would anything else that I purchase-I research before I buy. This site has everything and the members all bring something to the table! A feast of knowledge and such kind, helpful kindred spirits are right here! Thanks everyone! (Sorry for sounding like a dork...but I am what I am (:

I started growing plants when I was 9, an Asparagus plumosa fern, it started to die and my Mom gave me a book on plants filled with all kinds of information and pictures, before I knew it I had plants everywhere.
I was attending Cal-Polly in the 80s and learned of a nursery called Paradise, had to go, there I met Gary Hammer and he introduced me to orchids. He would go to Mexico and collect orchids and other plants, bring them back, sell them or send to conservatory's around the would. I went to Mexico with him on a collecting trip once and was amazed at how epiphyte's grew and how wide spread they were. From then on I was and orchid addict.
I came to OB years ago looking to gain more information on growing and also to look at pictures of orchids and get to know people that share a similar interest. I have a boatload of knowledge on plants and am always ready to share information and new ideas.

Wanted to see photos. Wanted to post a few, too. Also wanted to know what other's had experienced while growing orchids so I can avoid mistakes in areas I don't know much about yet.

When I was getting back into orchids I looked at a number of orchid sites to learn about growing them. Many sites very little information, only a series of people posting photos. Others were loaded with real jerks who treated most other members poorly. This one is the only one I belong to.

I had a period of intense stress back in 2019 and I ended up buying a half dead phalaenopsis at Walmart because it looked like how I felt and I took pity on it. Nursed it back to health with help from this forum, and now I have oncidiums, cattleyas, encyclias and even one brassocattleya. Honestly taking care of those plants helped me and my family deal with a lot since we started, so I guess I'm here for my mental health!
