Talking My trip to the Pacific Orchid Expo **Uber Pic HEAVY**

The family and I went to the Pacific Orchid Exposition today, and boy was it ever fun! There were some absolutely fantastic displays. I had a hard time getting pictures due to the number of other people trying to do the same… some with big tripods. There were also lights shining right on the ‘chids that helped with display, but made it more difficult to get good pictures of some of them. I took pictures of less than half of what was there. Here is a sampling of it.

If anyone can ID this first one for me, I’d be very happy. I forgot to take not of what it was, and I want it! LOL

The length these brassia blooms were at least twice my hand.

A truly amazing Dendrobium specio-kingianum ‘snowfall’ ccm/aos, and a picture of me next to display for size comparison!

This “tank” was awesome! Chock full of masdies, and the hanging ones are draculas.

**A note for any vendors who might read this!**
There were several things that influenced my purchases, and a couple observations that I had which might be useful.

1. If prices were not marked, or there was not a tag in the pot or in the vicinity, I did not bother. There were way too many people milling about to try to ask such a simple question, and there was more than likely another vendor with either the same, or similar, plant with a price and a tag.

2. Be careful what conversations you have while customers are looking at your plants. One vendor was having a conversation with friend (and it seemed also a fellow vendor) about sales at the show. The two carried on about how bad sales were, it was the worst sales they’d ever seen at a show, and that they had just covered their table fee with the orchids they had sold, but that meant the orchids had basically been given away for free. And on they went in an “oh woe is me” tone. Meanwhile, here I am, happy customer with cash burning a hole in my pocket right there under their nose not being at all shy about the fact that I was really taking a close look at his plants. A simple question of, “can I answer any questions for you?” “is there anything specific you’re looking for” or “what type of growing conditions to you currently have” could have kept me from just walking away, and would have been a much better use of time. I felt the conversation was quite unprofessional, and I felt a bit like I was eavesdropping on a private chat! No wonder this vendor had terrible sales! LOL The very helpful and friendly folks at Andy’s asked me all these question nearly as soon as I began to look. Some of that money escaped my pocket there!

By and large, the vendors were great. All were very friendly and helpful. I felt real bad walking away from some of them because they had engaged me so well, but they just didn’t have something I was interested in. I was certainly in spend mode, but did have to stick to a budget! With no budget, I would have snapped up stuff from nearly every vendor there.

Default And the good stuff!

Now for the really fun stuff! What I brought home with me!! Since last weekend was my birthday, I saved up all that birthday money… and chipped in a couple bucks myself, in order to have fun. There were tons of vendors! Of course, there were tons of cymbidiums and phals and catts and dens. But also, there were paphs, many epidendrums, and lots of masdies, as well as several vendors selling a good variety of species orchids. Many vendors were there with great plants that were not in bloom. Sadly, I only saw 2 vandas, and a couple ascosendas… but nothing I was willing to pay the asking price for. I was really hoping for a better selection of vandaceous orchids, but no such luck.

I bought from 4 vendors, and my daughter was given small Den. Kingianum var. alba by a gentleman with the San Francisco Orchid Society. It’s got 6 little canes and is in a 2” pot.

Here is what I bought!

~ From Cal Orchid: Den. Specio-kingianum ‘crysta’ (just beginning to bloom) and Ans. Africana ‘Garden Party.’

~From Andy’s Orchids: Den. Atennatum

~From Ontario Orchids: green and white paph. No tag. Not quite open yet.

~And from a vendor I can’t remember The only vendor that didn’t stick a card or receipt with name in there. It may ave been Golden Gate Orchids… but I just can’t remember. Anyhow, my favorite of my purchases! Den. Atroviolaceum.

This plant looks so cool from the top!

: drool::f aint:

I really shouldn't have looked at these. I can't afford any fines for drool damage on the floors or carpet in my dorm.

I think I like the second picture best, although they are all so amazing that it really doesn't mean much to choose a favorite. Thanks for sharing this with us Nichole! Sorry, not sure what that one orchid is, but it does look familiar, like a dendrobium (maybe) that I saw once.

Amazing, jaw-dropping, sensational, Nicole. I've never seen such huge masdie's before and those bulldog Paphs... My cousin was at this show (I think) buying up all the Cym's.

Love your choices especially the atroviolaceum, one of my all time favorites, too.

Thanks for these great pics. Glad you had fun!

Thanks for all the pictures! I like the picture with the phals in the background, and miltoniopsis and paphs in the front! Very nice!

And you chose nice plants too! Esp. your last den!

Looks like quite a show! Never been to a show where Andy was. Probably just as well -- no telling how deeply in debt I'd be!
