Stay at home Mom is a very taxing job! I did it for a while after my daughter was born. I went to bed dead tired every night and never felt like I had gotten everything done. Sometimes it's the more economical thing to do when the kids are younger too. You just can't replace that time you're able to spend with them, and you don' have to worry about childcare.

I own my own company and since my husband lost his job over a year ago, (We are/were tied to the real estate market) it's been tough. I also have a daughter in college but she has a part time job with buys her food and gas...I cover the rest.

But for the grace of God, I've found a way to keep everything intact...including my ever growing collection - I started an orchid business! Good Grief!!! Now I have two companies, a mortgage, two car payments...I owe, I owe it's off to work I go....

Just remind him of a couple of issues:

1. God made a few perfect male heads, then He hid His mistakes under hair.

2. Baldness is caused by high testosterone. All my hair rubbed off on the headboard!

Don't worry, Hedge. If anyone gives you a hard time, just send them over to my mom. She'll be more than happy to clip them upside the head and tell them a "thing or two". Once upon a time, my brother's in-laws were over (now ex in-laws). Somehow the subject of money came up and just WHOSE money it was. The mother-in-law --who worked fulltime -- felt that the money my dad earned was his as he worked for it. My mom didn't say anything at the time (trying to keep the peace in the family) but does wish she had. In her opinion, anyone who thought she was going to do all of what you mentioned (don't forget to add: prepare all the meals, get the kids off to school, get them to their doctor/dental appointments,...) for "the-fun-of-it"/free has rocks in their head.

Funding? Well I'm single so no kids and those related bills (& don't anybody go giving me that garbage of how much easier single life is -- keep in mind that single folks often have NO one to rely on for help w/ income, taking care of the home, let alone taking care of oneself when ill or injured, no one right there to share life's other burdens ... Anyone who thinks that's "easy" hasn't done it in a while). Once in a while I splurge but even when the old tax return comes in, generally find myself holding back and choosing to put most of it into a savings account. Then too, I live in an apt (can't afford a home though hoping too someday). One "advantage" -- lack of space really makes me pretty picky as to what plants are coming home.

Where do I get the money for my orchid habit?
I have no idea, but I do buy more than I should.
My wife and I both work two jobs, each, to support our SoCal mortgage(1095 sqft @ $3400/month) and send our two kids to collge, and support our many hobby's.
I am a costruction worker for my main job (HVAC installer) and a part time teacher at the local vocational school.

This is a nice thread to find out what other people do with their time away from taking care of orchids.

For myself, I am a stay at home mom of a one and two year old. There are many advantages to staying at home as someone mentioned above, mainly expenses associated with daycare and watching over the kids myself. I am a CPA and retired from govt work as a federal agent.

Therefore, I guess my husband funds my orchid purchases. I have to be very choosy about what I go crazy buying. I am making up a list so that I can buy chids at the local show in April.

I am so looking forward to seeing what we do with the coming project, maybe I can get some extras.

That is correct Susanne, but we would not live anywhere else.
I see that you live in Spring Hill Florida, I don't know where that is located in the state but my wife and I have been to Kissamee, it was very nice but we don't like hurricanes. I know we have earth quakes but not as often as Florida has hurricanes.
The one great thing Florida and SoCal have in common is great weather for growing orchids.
