Oh, there's quite a story behind the possible identity of the cultivarial name
... the originator of this cultivar (Bob Wellenstein; Antec) says the plant is not the true 'Candor Red Streamers'. The flowers posted in the auction were not the actual flowers of the plant listed, but of the same species (
Paph. phillipinense var.
roebelenii), used as a representative picture.
Machiela was attacked by many people on the situation. If Bob Wellenstein released divisions of his original plant, then it is still possible that this is the actual 'Candor Red Streamers'. It is in the best interest for Bob Wellenstein to deny the plant's cultivarial name, but we will see as soon as it blooms. I am personally hoping for a normal
Paph. phillipinenense var.
roebelenii...
The auction also had a person make multiple bids in a row. This person may have been trying to pass the reserve price, or just been bidding stupid. Either case, I personally don't see any signs of "shill bidding", or having someone falsely raise the price up. At OSF, it was preached as "fraud", and later the story changed, due to libel. It is wise to not say something definite such as the accusation of fraud without cold hard evidence, and I was then attacked for that view
So, this has been dubbed "The Fraud Orchid"...
