I've seen this post but been afraid to read it. I sort of knew what was coming. Michigan (and my kids) are also in the top whatever of layoffs and the kids live from check to check. My son-in-law said yesterday "we just can't get ahead".

I have absolutely no words of wisdom. I wish I had words of encouragement. I wish things were different. Well- they are, we have a leader that promises something different (like I haven't heard that before). The last thing I would have guessed is Oregon with so much unemployment (outside the timber industry). My dream state (that I have lived in) was always Oregon. Average wages, average employment, average costs, average taxes, average weather. Pretty decent place to bring up a family. But lately it all seems to have gone to Heck, hasn't it? (My grandson says: "you know the definition of Heck"? It's for persons that don't believe in Hell!)

Thanks everyone for your very thoughtful responses. We'll all get through this one way or another. I've told my son that given the circumstances and the current economic climate that now would be the opportune moment to go back to school and finish at least his AA degree. He's beginning to see the wisdom in that, and even if it still doesn't net him a job he will have that sense of accomplishment. He's signed up for College Algebra, and I'm crossing my fingers he gets through it this time. (This will be his 3rd attempt, he withdrew the last 2 times because he was too busy at work). Math is his worst subject so I'm hoping if he can get beyond that hurdle he might be more encouraged to take additional classes.

He won't be homeless (we own the townhouse he rents), and his car also won't be repoed (borrowed money from the bank of Mom & Dad), so he's in a much better situation that many people. We're financially OK for now so are able to help out with other bills.

Thanks for the advice Gin, I'll definitely repot. Some of the plants look much better today. Amazing what a little water will do.

Ross, the housing market crash is the reason Oregon is in a world of hurt. No one is building new homes these days. Timber Products just shut down their White City mill last week laying off 45 workers. It's just the most recent of many mill closures in the last couple of months. Of course the high unemployment rate affects the entire state. Everything in the state budget comes from property taxes or income tax. When nobody's working state revenues pretty much dry up leading to even more layoffs. It's a vicious cycle that feeds itself. The rate of the downward spiral in the state economy makes me dizzy!

Thanks again everyone! You're the best!

Terri, you sound like a really awesome Mom (and I'm sure hubby is an awesome Dad too ). It's nice to see that there are still people who really understand what family is all about. We've had our share of being helped out by family, and we've done some helping too.

I think that your son going back to school is a fantastic idea. School is the best place to be right now if you're unable to find work and can swing it. Jobs have become so competitive, you've got to invest in your skills and education to boost that resume.

I hear you on the housing market too... things were already way over-inflated here, so we've been hit especially hard. We went from having 70K of equity in our house, to being upside down 100K!! We're just sitting tight and hoping "it" doesn't hit the fan in our life before things start to turn around. lol

Well, I thought I give all you supportive folks an update. The kid found a job! God love him! He's working as the front desk clerk at a swanky hotel in Ashland. He's got the 3-11 shift which suits him fine, he's a night owl. It's about a dollar over Oregon's minimum wage, and they have guaranteed him 36-38 hrs a week. And they will adjust his schedule to work around whatever classes he's enrolled in. He did enroll in the College Algebra class and mid term he has a B! He's pretty much committed to completing the AA even if he has to do it one class per quarter. So! We're all feeling much much better!

His chids are doing great. I repotted everything. Good thing too, many had bad root rot and a few had some creepy crawler eggs. Ewww! The Brassia didn't make it. I think it was pretty much dead by the time I got it and as soon as I started watering it rotted. The rest are shooting out new roots like crazy and some of the Catts are sending up new growths! It amazes me how tough orchids really are.

Thanks again everyone!

That's fantastic news!!

It sounds like everything is falling into place. I love to hear things like that. Too bad for the little Brassia but if that's the worst of it, I'd say everyting is A-OK!
