Default Meyers Conservatory

I received an email this morning from Meyers Conservatory. They are asking for donations to help them to continue to offer their flasking services.

They have information here:

Please Donate Funds to Meyers Conservatory

It seems that they are having difficulties - and let's face it, who isn't!? - giving the rising costs of everything and people cancelling flask reservations. They did increase the base costs of flasks not too long ago, and at that time they gave everyone an option to cancel their reservation if they couldn't accept the new base price.

While I have not yet been able to get any flasks from them - I've been too far down the list - I do still have two reservations that I am hopeful about. Whether I get plants from them or not, I think that what they do is important, as they seem to be quite keen on orchid species conservation. For example, one policy that they have is that they don't charge more for flasks of rare plants. They only base the price on what it costs them to make the flasks.

They also have quite a lot of information published on their website about pollination and raising seedlings from flask, which I have used.

Maybe someone else out there has more direct experience with them - please share it, if you do.

If you would like to help out at all, have a look at their established plants or their flasks:

I am sure that any additional sales income would be greatly appreciated!

I purchased a flask of Cattleya luteola from MOC, and I received nothing but the best in quality of the flasklings and nothing but the best in service! It would be devastating to see them go!

Sue,
Would it be possible for us to set up some kind of a donation thingy for the OB to where we could send in a $1.00 or $2.00 each and then send it to them all at once? I know it wouldn't be a huge amount by any means....but I think some of us would be willing scrape up something to combine into one donation for them? What do you think? I know Ray posted that he is going to donate part of his sales which is awesome!

I traded a few seedlings with a friend who got a flask from Troy at the MOC. I was sold instantly! The size, quality, vigor, etc. were exceptional! I signed up immediately.

MOC has a HUGE list of offerings, lots of 'ready to go' flasks that require no reservation. They also offer established seedlings that are ready to go as well. Based on the size and health of the deflasked seedlings, I'd be the established seedlings are stout too.

Donations will help obviously, but isn't ordering more fun? Just take a look, I'm sure they have that long lost orchid on your wish-list that you can't find anywhere else. They had mine!

That's a GREAT idea, Becca!!

If it can't be done here on the site, I'd be happy to coordinate the donations through PayPal and then send them on behalf of OB.

I'll check with Marty and the other Moderators before I confirm that is the way to go.

PS. Royal is right - it may be more fun to go and see if they have something that you've been looking for!! Shopping for a good cause! And don't forget about Ray's generous offer as well! There are many ways that we can help out and ensure that people trying to do good don't go out of business!!

I would love to order more flasks....but I have some replacement bulbs I need to put most of my money towards (6 bulbs for one orchidarium and 8 bulbs for the other...eeek!)....and there may be many others out there that don't have the money to buy a flask but might be able to afford a few dollars or more towards a contribution, but not quite enough for a flask! I am so glad we are looking into it!

Shannan, I'm up for whatever needs to be done

Even if everybody that is interested donates just a dollar or two, it could be a nice OB donation to MOC

Well, OK then!! Anyone who want to contribute towards an OrchidBoard donation to MOC, PM me and I will give you the PayPal account details.

As Sue and everyone says, even if it is a dollar or two, when combined together, we can make them a nice donation and help them continue doing the work that they do!
