My orchid library
I am not sure if this is the right forum for this, but thought I'd stick it here. I have some other titles but they're off in boxes somewhere, and I can't find them. Nor can I remember titles. Most of these are pretty dated at this point because I purchased them many years ago, when I first came to this hobby. But here's what I can find:
Baker, Margaret L. and Charles O. Baker. Orchid Species Culture: Pescatoria, Phaius, Phalaenopsis, Pholidota, Phragmipedium, Pleione. Portland: Timber Press, 1991.
An excellent book on the culture of the numerous species within the given genera. Each section details all aspects of the species’ native growing habitat, thus enabling the grower to make the best possible attempt to recreate the conditions in the home growing area.
Cribb, Dr. Phillip and Christopher Bailes. Orchids: A Romantic History with a Guide to Cultivation. Philadelphia: Running Press, 1992.
A cute little book, though not of a great deal of value beyond the very basics. Mostly fluff.
Gupton, Oscar W. and Fred C. Swope. Wild Orchids of the Middle Atlantic States. Knoxville: The University of Tennessee Press, 1986.
An excellent book for those in the Mid-Atlantic area to find, identify, and culture native orchids.
Kijima, Takashi. Orchids: Wonders of Nature. New York: Mallard Press, 1987.
Some of the finest orchid photography I’ve seen published, this book is worthwhile for any fan.
Rittenhausen, Wilma and Brian. Orchids: A Splendid Obsession. San Francisco: Soma Books, 1999.
A very nice book written by renowned orchid experts.
Sessler, Gloria Jean. Orchids & How to Grow Them. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1978.
A nice, basic book for the beginner to middling grower, this book also includes spectacular photography.
Skelsey, Alice. Orchids. Alexandria, VA: Time-Life Books, 1978.
From the Time-Life Encyclopedia of Gardening, this book contains good, useful, basic information, as well as some basics on specific plants.
Stewart, J. and E. F. Hennessy. Orchids of Africa. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1981.
An interesting travel guide.
Williams, Brian. Orchids for Everyone. New York: Salamander Books/Crown Publishers, 1980.
Possibly my favorite orchid book because of the interesting details provided for basic to moderately experienced growers.
