I love Paphs. and consider myself a Paph. specialist.
However, even though I’ve grown and bloomed it in the past I cannot find a warm spot in my heart for Paph. charlesworthii.

I don't hate or dislike any plant, as I see them as wonders of nature. Like others said, some of them are boring. I prefer species or primary hybrids, especially those that are wierd and hard to find.

hmmm, this thread is bringing out the best in all of us!! :bowing

so even tho we have a proverbial boatload of generic grocery store phals (and as beginners, NOIDs are our jam!), i hate them. yes, you can find something cool about some of them, and there are some unique characteristics, but besides not liking the flowers i don't like what they've done to the orchid market. you could argue grocery noids have exposed more people to orchids, but i would provide other arguments against.

otherwise so far the only orchid i really disliked was one where the colours on the flower did not play well. some colours are not meant to go together...thats nature, not my rule.

love this thread tho!

and on that paph award, the flower count is great and the uniformity in height, form, and color is pretty good from what you can see in the picture. im no judge, but as a paph nerd im biased.

I thought it would be a good opportunity to rant without actually offending anyone. I sure mangled that title tho...

When it's nature....sometimes it's only manipulation.

It's that pesky two-legged pollinator with a toothpick...I don't "hate" any orchid, but prefer the species that look like natural species. "Big, round, flat" doesn't excite me, would prefer something that pollinator would recognize.

"Look, we made a Phalaenopsis that is round and flat as a daisy!"

We share the same vision of nature, Roberta!:)

I would never say I hate anything but I frequently say I would never acquire something.

I'm with the species lovers.

Keysguy 02-12-2025 08:03 PM

I'm in!

I'll concur with a lot already mentioned like phal's, paph's (except philippenense who I'm mad at right now because it's apparently decided to take a year off), peloric's. I've actually decided I'm not a big fan of vanda's unless they are species even though that tends to make them less colorful than their manually manipulated cousins.

I actually like phrags because of the successive blooms and I am starting to find an appreciation for certain dendrobiums. I like my speciosum and spectabile but the clock is ticking on how many more times they'll get schlepped to a show due to the size and weight. I bought an amethystoglossum 2 years ago and I'm counting 14 spikes right now. And it's not a very big plant. I can't wait to see it.

I've decided in my old age that a plant has to have something very unique about it for me to get excited about it and want one and in nearly every instance, it will be a species.
