Nice Schwerter haul!!! You can never go wrong with an order from them.


As to the Onc Nelly Isler, I don't think the state of the plant is anything worth complaining about. It's a nice,healthy looking plant, sold in media typical for this sort of plant in commercial nurseries. The amount of roots seems typical based on the Nelly Isler plants I bought (and killed) when I first started the orchid hobby.

You got 2 plants for the price of one, which is usually a nice surprise. The garden center paid for plants with X number of spikes, and that's the case for this plant. I don't think they or the average consumer are overly concerned about it being made up of 1 or multiple plants. It's not in the grower's interest to pot 2 plugs per pot (lost profits) so it was likely either an accident or 2 runt seedlings intentionally potted together.

They weren't overpotted and they look good to me. I may get slapped by the two mods posting here but people need to be calm and thoughtful when dealing with orchids. They grow slowly. Impetuous and excitable doesn't work.

Snails can be killed with strong coffee. Search here on snails and coffee to read how.

Well, I would've preferred a larger plant instead of two smaller since it's my first one(s). I guess I'll have the honor of killing two instead of one.

I honestly don't see how it could've been a mistake, so your runt guess makes the most sense, and in that case I really would've preferred to have one larger plant instead. I don't trust myself with runts.

Oh, and I'm really weird since I don't like having two of the same hybrid (unless they have a different color on the flowers or something). If both of the plants make it, I'm giving one away to my friend.

The psudobulbs on one of the Nellys are wrinkly - the newer one less than the older one. It's easier to tell with the plants in front of you than on the pictures. But no, it doesn't look sick or declining or anything like that and I hope it stays that way.

The other Nelly just looks healthier in comparison, which was why I separated them. I don't know how long the first one would've stayed fine if they had remained in the same pot. I'm not going to put them back in the same pot again. I've messed with them enough as it is.

I do want to say that it's not like I'm acting without thought, even though it appears like it to you. Overthinking is more my problem if anything.

I'm well aware that they're slow and need time to do anything. It'll take time for me to get back into the swing of things and unfortunately some orchids will fall victim along the way. That's how I work as a person and I honestly don't like it. It's much healthier for me to just care a bit less.

I don't drink coffee and don't have any at home. I'll keep an eye out for any more snails (one of the Phals from Schwerter also had one) and do the coffee thing if needed.

When theres a slug or snail, there are others for sure. You can take your plant for a walk and coffee.

Better yet… make me coffee, and I have a bunch of grounds you can have!

hey mutant,

just perhaps some reassuring thoughts, we got one of those nelly islers from a grocery last year cause the girl really like the flower, but it was one tiny, wrinkled pbulb with a spike.

one or two opined that it wouldn't make it with only one pbulb. buuuut, over the winter it wa repotted and now has a strong new growth! so, i guess what im saying is that these isler grocery clones seems to be pretty strong growers and even tho its small, don't give up on it! bet of luck, and if nothing else your friend will probly be happy to get another free orchid

I mean, my neighbors already knows I'm weird so that would just confirm that. Sounds like I'll have to get some coffee then and invite the snails for a cup o' joe.

Only thing I'm worried about is that my orchids are going to get hooked on coffee. I'm a tea-person all the way, so our relationship might get a bit strained if they want coffee every day.

I don't know if you'd want me to make you coffee. I remember the last time my mom came over and wanted me to cook for her. She got a lump of spaghetti and burned meat balls. She's never asked me to cook for her again...

I guess they can be little fighters as long as you have the right conditions for them, which I do except during summer.

I hope they both make it so I can give my friend one of them. She loves the flowers on them as well. Her boyfriend on the other hand... He definitely won't like me increasing her already pretty large orchid collection (large for someone who's not as in to orchids as most people here are that is).

Aww, the big bud on the Phal. LD's Bear King x George Vasquez didn't make it. I think the Phal. Mini Mark will abort one of the spikes and at least two buds will blast on the other one. I hope the other buds will make it though. So far the spike on the Phal. CTL Christopher looks okay, but I don't know if it's stalled yet.

But all spikes/buds were just bonuses and not expected so no harm done.

I've bought some lettuce to put on top of the substrate in the pots. Just to check if there's anything interested in a little nibble (Jon looked like he was, but didn't take a bite). Also bought some instant coffee that I hope will suffice as potential snail killer.

Check the lettuce early in the morning. Snails and a d ugs are more active at night.

And slugs love little lids filled with beer. An excellent reason to open a good IPA.
