I'm not talking about handing out keys if that's what you mean. It's the zip that's not installed yet just like what's downloadable from their site. Anyway, I hope I can read and interpret their license properly. I must admit, I'm no lawyer.

Yes, to release the virtual machine packaged with the trial version of OrchidWiz commercially would require permission from the owners.

What he's doing is making the Windows 8 or 10 30-day trial version available via a virtual machine to people who don't have Windows 8 or 10. The 30-day trial version is available on the OrchidWiz Web site. He's packaging the trial version with a virtual machine that will emulate Windows 8 or 10 on another operating system.

If a person wanted the full program they would buy a key and unlock it inside the virtual machine. There would only be one copy running, the copy within the virtual machine, so it would fit within the license.

Long-term this would require constant maintenance so the product shipped with virtual machine software that was compatible with whatever OSs were out there. It would be best too if it came with a sniffer that detected the base OS and decided which VM software to use.

But it would also be legal to put instructions somewhere so people could download and install their own virtual machine, then download the OrchidWiz trial version and install it themselves.

That's true, I could package a virtual machine that has the wineprefix set up, and a file with instructions to go to orchidwiz.com. I couldn't strip out the web browser in that case, because you'd need it to access the orchidwiz site, or I'd have to give instruction on making a shared folder and putting in the guest additions disk and lots of stuff that complicates things a lot for anyone who's not experienced with this stuff.

You and me both! On both points! As complete as the program is, that's a lot of money.

On Wednesday I decided to go ahead and purchase an Orchidwiz update before the EUR/USD exchange rate drops even further. I chose the download option and to my surprise, a $20 shipping fee was tacked on at the end of the process. I didn't go through with payment and sent them an email.

I'm still waiting for a response, so in the meantime I thought I'd check here. Is that shipping fee normal despite the product description saying the contrary?

Not normal.. sounds like an error. If you don't get a response, if you pay they will issue a refund when they get around to the email. I have never had a problem with them issuing refunds

Good to know, but I'd like to avoid overpaying since I have to pay bank fees when paying with my credit card in foreign currencies... I'll wait and see, and hope they'll reply next week.

I buy the download version - no shipping charges at all.

I'm hoping everyone in this discussion is still with us. I would like to get any updates that have been found. I've purchased the program, but am having difficulty opening. I can't even get the page to enter the key.

Didn't it ask for the key when you did the installation? Your software environment is different that mine. I know that emailing with them is a pain, but likely you'll need to ask them.
