Attention program chairs - last night Dotty Woodson, PhD, spoke to the Desert Valley Orchid Society on Pests and their Control. It was an excellent talk covering mostly arthropods, but also gastropods, bacteria, fungi and viruses. I took notes, and will eventually write them up to post here.

It was a 90 minute talk she squeezed into less time for us, so plan accordingly. A major theme was integrated pest management. I highly recommend her for your society programs. Here are extracts from her bio, which appeared in our society newsletter:
Dr. Dotty Woodson grown orchids since 1973. She and her husband Berry Woodson have registered many Phalaenopsis hybrids. They grow orchids in 2,000 square feet in 3 greenhouses in Fort Worth, TX. Facebook: D&B Orchids. Email: dottywoodson@gmail.com

Dotty has presented orchid programs to orchid growers and gardeners in many states, at four International Master Gardener Conference, four International Phalaenopsis Alliance Conferences, California Speakers Day, Texas, New England and New York Speakers Circuits and to international audiences on Norwegian and Holland America Cruise Lines. Woodson is a member of the Fort Worth Orchid Society, Greater North Texas Orchid Society, Southwest Regional Orchid Growers Association and the American Orchid Society. Woodson has also written articles about orchid culture and pest control for many newspapers and magazines and appeared on many television and radio shows to discuss growing orchids. In addition, she produced several orchid videos and contributed material and photographs for several books.

Woodson has BS and MS degrees in Horticulture from Tarleton State University and a doctoral degree from Texas A&M and Texas Tech Universities. Before retirement, Woodson taught landscape water conservation by design, plant selection and irrigation efficiency for 32 years at Tarrant County College, TCU, UTA, and for Texas A&M Extension as a County Extension Agent in Tarrant County and Water Resource Extension State Specialist. For 21 years, Dotty wrote a weekly horticulture column for the Fort Worth Star Telegram. Dotty appeared weekly on NBC News and other television programs for 25 years.

Dotty is a lot of fun. I'll also add my two cents that she's a great speaker for orchid societies.

By coincidence, our local Calcasieu Orchid Society is having the same talk by a different speaker. Is it the usual spring topic?

Sometimes a coincidence is just a coincidence.
