just wanted to give a shout out to the significant other, who - truth be told- is the real plant whisperer of our little team. she supports my craziness, teaches me spanish, and laments along with me when any of our plants suffer.

always....always, when i have given up on something, she perseveres. here is a little prop we got from a friend while visiting spain last month. brought it back with 2 leaves and some roots in a ziplock. both leaves wilted immediately and one fell off, and as i was throwing it in the circular file she stopped me and insisted we put it next to the sink. 3 days ago we see a new leaf coming up. and this ain’t the first time this little scenario has played out!

anyways, here’s to the significant others and their immense levels of tolerance and patience!

You have no idea.

Michele and I met 49 years ago on a blind date, and were married 2 years later.

While pregnant with our son (and a long time afterwards), I traveled 6-7 days a week.

I operated First Rays out of our basement, turning it into hell on earth with spilled and cluttered supplies. I filled a 30 cubic yard roll-off cleaning it out before we sold and moved.

She's a gem.

Well lucky you. Mine does not show the slightest interest in my plants, does not enable it, and has firmly vetoed my ideas of building a terrarium or adding more shelves. So I mostly keep my orchid related activity to myself.

I am in the same situation as camille. Spouse is completely not a plant person. He never had any idea what I was growing outside (we had a fruit tree orchard as well as an ornamental pond, an herb garden and a butterfly garden). He doesn't even see plants unless they irritate him (bugs, messy), then he complains about them and wants to be rid of them. Recently, he shown some interest in the Nepenthes (he hates bugs).

Some of you are quite fortunate.

I occasionally have to lie about the amount of plants I order or their value, but my girlfriend is very into plants as well, and puts up with my crap.
I considered naming a hybrid after her in appreciation of her commitment, but sadly she didn't fancy it.

Here's a toast to all supportive partners, no matter the hobby!

haha !!!! At first, when I clicked on the pic --- I thought it was a humor thing - about the plant being the significant other!

But I know what you mean now!

Also - what sort of plant is that one?

omg, i really didn’t even think about the implications that photo might (imply?)! to be honest, not really sure what it is, but the main plant it came from looked like a hoya of some kind with nice white flowers.

as for you guys that have, let’s say, uninterested partners, then i commend you all the more! i was married once, a long time ago, and my ex-wife was not supportive of my bonsai addiction at the time....especially on watering days in our tiny apartment with carpeting. so i feel your pain, which is also why i am so thankful everyday that she is understanding and even helps a lot....if only she would stop buying grocery store noids!

ray, your spouse sounds next level! i hope you get her nice things for birthdays and anniversaries

Mine is happy that I am happy. He isn't nearly as curious about them or any of my fragrant flower trees but is very helpful when asked to pick bugs off them or move heavy pots around. Oh he doesn't mind the credit card bill either which is a plus lol!!!
