Dusty has entered the phase of realizing the first year orchids will develop based on how they were grown previously. Listening to the usual garbage advice given here will only make growers as good as the perceived wisdom these people have. Ie average.

It's not truly what you need to know to grow them well. They will grow, sure. But how about making them grow twice as good? On this forum I only see a couple of people and they don't participate in the daily garbage exchange for good reason that have achieved this, saying something other than garbage on here just makes people like Dusty call them a noob.

I have come to the conclusion there are two types of growers, the people that grow orchids for their flowers and then there are the serious growers that try to understand what their orchids need in order to flower reliably every year. This is a good forum for beginners to chat about orchids but start talking about what orchids truly need to thrive and nobody knows what is what anymore.

The difference being similar to a boss and the secretary in a company. The secretaries will always slag off the boss. It doesn't mean they know what they are talking about.

I thought you said you were leaving. You also said you were blocking me. Apparently both untrue. Please do not address me in any further posts. You have been called for bad advice and misinformation by more than a couple people of high reputation. Live up to your word.

hey dusty, i saw how your reddit posts all got downvoted (im guessing because you mention avoiding mog), so ive upvoted all that i see to try and get you some karma back! hahahah, it is sort of funny that yours with negative karma are instantly followed by someone saying, “watch mog on YouTube” and they have like 10 upvotes.

they really like her over there, don’t they?! maybe i should start watching more of her vids....

Yeah, I really don't care about their vote system. It doesn't change anything about me except where I spend net time. I'm almost positive e someone who comes here disparaging the members has had something to do with that. It isn't important because my plants do fine and don't have to be perfect. Life isn't perfect. Thanks for your support. I appreciate it.

I have Miss Orchid Girl in my YouTube subscription list.

I think the channel is most useful to determine what plants a person might want to have in their collection.

Some of the plants she has shown off/demonstrated really caught my attention and I searched for them and bought them subsequently.

To be honest, there aren’t that many places you can get full motion video and descriptions of orchid species and hybrids in bloom. I think that’s the most valuable part of the channel. Essentially, I use her videos for inspiration on what I might want in my collection.

I think I may have in the past killed a plant with hydrogen peroxide. I do not recommend using peroxide on orchid roots as it seems to do far more harm than good. I don’t really pay much attention to the cultural advice on the channel.

I also look at r/orchids but only use it to look at the photos. Once or twice I helped someone identify a plant.

This reminds me of Facebook orchid groups which is mostly people trying to save their phal. It’s funny to me now when people get so passionate about dyed orchids. One side is like, “no no you can’t just dye your orchid.” And the other side is like, “omg it’s their orchid their choice.”

I like this forum because people expand my knowledge on here. It’s a great resource and overall it’s free of the excess grief that the internet can offer. And I like the charm of this forum format.

In defense of missorchidgirl, she offers interesting content to beginners that she puts a lot of effort into. I guess I have to take a “cast the first stone” approach and say that even if I had the experience to grow orchids, I can’t say I would want to put in the work that she does to make videos. There are no other orchid YouTube channels that have as much fame as hers and it’s most likely because she found a way to make it work for her. From a business standpoint, I give her props.

That being said, in my short time of collecting orchids and trying my best to make them happy, I have found that her information often is not my way of doing things. I’m sure that others who delve into growing orchids more will pass the great beginner barrier on their own. Surely the orchids we keep will be our harshest critic and test us more than any person.
