You can always try to convince him that the plants, even small plants, are great at filtering out toxins from the air, so you are buying the plants solely for the sake of making your apartment's air healthier. It is not a complete lie. I have read a few articles lately, too, that people are more productive and happier in the presence of plants.

There is nothing wrong with compulsively buying mini orchids. There's always room for one more! Or three! As the others said, there are a lot of benefits to small plants. They take up less space so you can have more, the mini Catts tend to bloom multiple times a year instead of once a year like a lot of the big ones. You are definitely doing this right.
I have also been guilty of hiding new purchases from my family. I'm a teacher, so I usually get home first every day, and as soon as I get home, I unpack my plants, arrange them on the growing area, hide the boxes and packing material in the bottom of the trash, and hope nobody notice haha.
My problem, however, is that I LOVE the great big standard Catts, and I am sometimes unable to resist. I know the plant will get too big, but I figure I'll worry about what to do with in a few years when I really can't accommodate lol (I usually end up having to divide them and keep one division and give away the rest, even thought I would rather just let them go and develop into big specimen plants) I have a few that I love so much that I don't divide because I think they are worth the space (Lc Dinard 'Blue Heaven' is one such plant).
But don't worry. You're doing everything right

With most things ------- do in moderation heheh.
Whatever we choose to do, we will later find out what happens or can happen.
Some keep buying and may end up with expanding to outdoors, green-houses etc. Some start up orchid businesses. Others run out of growing space (like myself) ----- and then find that something automatic can happen --- which puts a bit of a cap on the numbers.
The number of orchids we grow generally should be a number that we can handle - without negative things happening (to the plants and to ourselves, or to others). But of course ----- depends on situation.

Sunset Valley is the one that always gets me. He has a great program for hybridizing mini Catts, and his selection of these plants is enormous. I don't even go to his website unless I'm prepared to buy ten plants. But they're so small! You can always find room!

I used to keep all my favorite vendor's websites open on the homepage of my browser, that turned out to be a terrible idea (luckily I have since broken this habit). This time a made the mistake of checking my email right when Andy's was having a sale (which ends today for those of you interested, free/reduced shipping and 10% off everything)!

By the way, Andy’s fall sale is going on until the 18th.
Mini orchids
Free shipping
10% off.[/QUOTE]
Glad I missed Andy's Sale! I just placed an order with SVO. Yay. Just like Afid, I am out of control when it comes to small Catts. (Oh well. I could be addicted to worse things -- like drugs, alcohol, gambling and the like. How could a few more small plants be a bad thing......?)

For whatever reason, I didn't get any notifications to this thread!
All of this support!
The enablement!
The outpouring of love!
Happy to report I am doing just as poorly as before.
With newly arrived additions from Andy's Orchids (YES I WAS ALMOST TOO AWARE OF THE SALE HELP), an incoming package from High Desert Orchids, and a seedling combo pack off Ebay.
Did I mention I have my eye on a few other plants?
Yes, because NOW my birthday is closer to TWO weeks away
