I didn't like the way video came out, so I added some commentary to a little orchid club talk. Welcome to my back yard...

My max temperature probably around 95 deg F (35 deg C) Occasionally higher (the all-time record is 109 F/43 C), but only for a short time. When it is hot, the humidity can be 10%... At such times, I water 2 or 3 times during the day. (When such weather occurs in the fall... we just are ending a record heat wave - what helps is that it isn't for so many hours since days are shorter.)
Mostly somewhat more temperate, though... and more humid. During the summer, it is the cooling nights that help - a really hot night is 72 deg F/22 deg C, summer nights are usually cooler except for a few weeks in August (relatively high humidity) So the plants get some relief. Being near the coast (like 4 miles/6 km) helps - the ocean is rather cold (look up California current) , so that moderates the temperature and causes nice afternoon breezes.

The yard is east-west, no trees giving shade in the middle in summer so all-day toasting. In winter, as the sun shifts south, much less sun as the house blocks it. Then even the bright areas only get a few hours of sun. (It was a challenge to find a good spot for my Mediterranean terrestrials, which need winter sun, there is one little area that faces south that gives them most of what they need) Rain is (unfortunately) rather rare. There may be a few weeks in some years where there is heavy cloud cover and rain, but not for very long. When such weather does occur, I have less concern about cold, because the clouds keep the temperature up - coldest days are almost always above 60 deg F/15 deg C. Coldest nights may get close to freezing, but then the sun warms things out of the danger zone.

Thought this pic was appropriate for this thread! Published by AEMET Canarias it shows North Atlantic Tropical Storms and Hurricanes from 1851 - 2004.

All seem to start in the region of Cape Verde, head West across the Atlantic, and then some curve round and come back across the Atlantic towards Europe.

You can see how The Canaries are in a protected bubble!

**********

In Fuerteventura we had the first rain yesterday for 2 years - all 2mm of it! (40 mm was forecast!)
All the islands had some rain, they get it far more than we do, and in Tenerife it fell as snow on Montana Teide.

**********

Day 71 of the eruption on La Palma. New vents have opened, (as well as the originals) new lava flows ......., The cemetery got buried yesterday as did the only crematorium on the island.
The good news is that so far only one person has died as a result of the eruption. An elderly guy (well, 70s)was on his roof clearing ash but the roof collapsed and took him down with it. Everyone in the vicinity is regularly clearing ash off of the roofs because of the added weight, especially now they are getting rain.

I don't see the AEMET picture... Wow, you get even less rain than where I live... where it isn't much and forecast is for another dry winter. (When any significant rain is forecast, I'm skeptical until it actually arrives. Disappointment is common here too.)

Ahh... figured it out... routing from my ISP to imgur... when I use my phone network I see it. I could see the code for the site, but when I tried to access it directly, ISP said that it couldn't find the site. Weird...And impressive data!

Bounced the modem, cleared the problem. If the map went a little farther north, would probably also trace the path of the Gulf Stream around Europe.

That's an interesting graphic Ray. I don't think I've ever seen it before.

In looking at it, another interesting optic is it clearly shows how Hispaniola and Cuba appear to, in general, "deflect" storms to go around them. The mountainous terrain I suspect but it shows the fact that we in the Florida Keys have, to a degree, benefitted from being on the leeward side of that phenomenon.

Why is it a colonialist name Sade? Is that not the correct nomenclature for the island landmass?
