Default What’s in your next haul?

Hello all,

What orchids are you waiting for to arrive in your next haul(s)?

For me, it is Cyrtorchis praetermissa, Cyrtorchis arcuata, Rhynchovola David Sanders, Masd triangularis, Masd datura, Masd Confetti, and my Podangis.

So, what are you awaiting in your next haul or hauls?

My (second) Podangis, who will be travelling with Pot. Chief Sweet Orange, Phalaenopsis Hymen (Phal. mannii 'dark' x Phal. lueddemanniana) and a Sedirea japonica 4N. And maybe one other plant. Yes, that Phal has a strange name!

Then I have a second order planned which is only boring but necessary stuff (bark, stakes, pots...)

Are you getting your Podangis (and others) from Marlow's?

Unfortunately, Marlow was out of Podangis. I had been able to find a Podangis on eBay from a very good seller I’ve used many times so I ended up getting that one. It has already shipped and will be arriving soon. I think many will be in awe of it when I post photos as this particular one had some very good “attributes”.

I got the Cyrtorchis and Rhynchovola from Diamond Orchids in California. I’ve always had a good experience with them. I recently got a nice Angraecum cross from them that is now blooming.

The Masdevalias are coming from Ecuagenera in Florida which is good as they won’t have to go too far to New York.

Three hauls total. I am so bad .

I'll confess that I was planning another order elsewhere for a Phal, Neofinetia and maybe a couple others. But I'm telling myself to be reasonable so using all my willpower to avoid going through with it. The problem is all 3 nurseries are in Germany (I'm inthe Netherlands) , so the shipping costs are about 20€. A total of 60€ on shipping alone is pretty hard to stomach.

Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids is speaking to our society Thursday. I'm hoping he brings me a Sobennikoffia robusta. I've been trying to get one for a long time.

I wouldn’t be able to stomach that shipping cost either.

Hopefully your mail system is better than mine for that price though. I pay $18 shipping to have plants get lost in the USPS mail on a regular basis.

Once I had an Angraecum go back and forth between D.C. and Stamford 6 times before finally coming back to Jersey city (which it had been in before they shipped it around for no reason). It was AWOL for 10 days.

Another time, a Zygo was lost without scans at Newark for 3 weeks. The USPS essentially told me the seller lied and never shipped the plant. They were wrong. I had given up on it as it had no tracking when it suddenly shows up postmarked from 3 weeks ago. I still have it but it was in bad shape. Other plants were supposed to be in the box that weren’t when I got it.

Every time a package goes through either the Jersey City or the White Plains distribution centers, I get anxiety as they both lose package so often. In Jersey they “lose” stuff.

In White Plains they ship it halfway across the country for no reason even though it’s 8 miles from my house. That is especially annoying.

That sounds horrific! No wonder a lot of people avoid ordering when it's too hot or too cold, the chances that the plants will sit somewhere for a long time seem rather high.

I have to say that we're pretty spoiled here. Within the Netherlands next day delivery is standard (but the country is only twice the size of Massachusetts) and from neighboring countries it's 2-5 days and generally there are no problems.

I've got two mini-phals on order from Hausermann's (Sogo Vivien 'Leaf's Edge' and Jiaho's Pink Girl), and I just got in two other orders last week. I think I need to calm down a little bit... :-P My orchid area just tripled in size (from 1 shelf to three shelves) so I went a little bit crazy! But now I need to see if these newbies tolerate my growing conditions (Tolumnias, Masdies are new to me) before I get too crazy again.

First priority is I've got my eye on a couple of "related" Catt. species, one from each of 2 different vendors and the only ones I have been able to find. Waiting on some vendor feedback here before I pull the trigger on that one as I am not acquainted with either.

After that, I've got 8 plants tee'd up for LOC (my first order with them as well) but won't pull the trigger on that till July as I'm still waiting for my LED lights which are back ordered. This is all for my new indoor basement grow space in NH to keep me sane this summer. Plan is to take them south to the shadehouse in Oct where I KNOW they'll be happy.

seca- Is your meeting live and he's going to be there in person? He gave a great talk to NH society this past Saturday via Zoom on "Species Habitat and Hybrid Culture". It was great, as always. I got a full page of notes on some of my species. Things I need to try with them. He breaks down how to find resources and understand what each one really needs in order to thrive. We have Alan every 2-3 years and he always has interesting topics and is a fun and engaging speaker. Have fun!
