I just grow it on the east-facing windowsill, so it gets temperatures around 62-68°F. That might not be the optimal temperature range, but the orchid has survived.

nepohyte, could you please elaborate a bit on how exactly do you grow your vuyl. I bought same plant spring 2018 in bloom. It bloomed this summer from a new bulb, but flowers were a few and much lighter color than initial blooms. I keep it near SE window, in an appartment in New York city. It gets a lot of light, but I am doing something wrong, the whole plant is turning yellow, possible underwatering. New shoot is growing, but also yellowish at the base. I really want to be able to keep it alive, but can't find much info on how to care for it.

Hi Veksa! I think your issue may be that the temps are too high - day temps should be strictly below 80 (below 75 is good). If your temps are okay, maybe it is a watering issue. Vuylstekeara and other Odontoglossum intergenerics seem to be unusually sensitive to water quality - this may result in stunted roots or the tips of the leaves turning brown. Watering itself should be frequent but the potting medium should drain very very well. I can't always provide optimal temps for my own Vuylstekeara and many of the leaves are slightly yellow, but it's still doing okay. Hopefully yours will take a turn for the better.

Thumbs up

Thank you for a quick response. Temperatures in summer were definitely more than 80 inside even with working AC. I ll try to think of a cooler place for it next summer providing it will survive NY winter ( and radiator heat). It it did survive one, but definitely not thriving. Root system seems to be OK, at least from what I can see. You mentioned sensitivity to water quality, is there are certain requirements for it?
