Oncidiums use a lot of water. I can't keep smaller Oncidiums alive in my lower humidity unless they're in sphagnum moss. The bark dries out too fast. Sometimes I even need to stand them in dishes of water.

Differing growing conditions require different techniques; I can understand how moss would retain too much water and exclude air, in some conditions.
