Oncidium insigne (Rolfe) Christenson
Known as Oncidium varicosum var. Baldin for long, this striking flower has been recognized as a distinct species in 2002 after the discovery that it breeds true from seed. Also DNA analysis has shown that although it is closely related to Oncidium varicosum they must be considered species apart. The calluses and the almost black mark around them, besides the huge midlobe, are distinctive in this species. The central lobe of the lip is more or less 4cm across!
