Mounting Oncidium Velutinum
Default Mounting Oncidium Velutinum

Bought these little ladies in a teeny terra cotta pot. They were doing great and started popping off keikis so I decided to give them a bigger home and repotted them. They didn't like that so much. Now, I'm mounting them so I can put them on my daily soak routine with my vanda and other mounted orchids. Thinking they'll start thriving again shortly.

Tolumnia velutina / Oncidium velutinum does exceptionally well mounted if you remember to water it every day.

I have one mounted that I received as a gift last Christmas. It has grown like a weed, very healthy and I hope to see it bloom one day. I grow mine in a greenhouse/shelving unit under T5 lights with high humidity, 80% and up and temp are mid 60s night, 80ish daytime. Fan running inside. I mist it daily and it has been in this setup since early July. Prior to the greenhouse it was growing in my kitchen window, south facing. It seems much happier now. They are cool little orchids.

Hope yours takes off on its new mount and continues to grow well for you.

Hi Pattywack,
I have mine in a SE facing window over my sink. They were doing great in the terra cotta with rocks, but the new medium/pot wasn't condusive to daily soaking. I think they're going to love the little stumps I put them on. Looking forward to blooms, but they're pretty just as they are.

Do you a picture of yours?

Hi estaćion seca,
Thanks for the links. I've read those many times over the past few months. Sorry my previous post wasn't clearer. I do have a daily soak/water routine with my mounted orchids and Vanda. Couldn't possibly forget.

They we're doing ok in their recent pot with orchid bark, but they seemed to do better when I was watering them daily. So I mounted them for easier watering.

Jazmyne, they should love being mounted! My plant came from Andy's and I believe he recommends only 2 or 3 waterings per week. I've only ever sprayed/mist my plant and the added humidity has helped it I think?

The growths on my plant have gotten much larger since I've had it and there are several new small fans. I think it's odd the way older fans seem to arch as they grow. It has new growths now that could be spikes? I'm not exactly sure but they certainly don't look like other new fans it has gotten previously. It also has crazy long roots! Here are a few recent pictures.

Unless you have really high humidity, I strongly suggest watering a mounted Tolumnia every day. 2 or 3 times a week isn't going to be enough in most houses, even over a sink.

ES, I checked Andy's again and he actually states: dry, 1 to 2 waterings per week, let dry between waterings.

Andy's shows bright light to full sun as well, mid day shade required.

I spray, mist my plant daily and it is kept in high humidity. I would be afraid to only water once or twice per week.

Mine shrivels severely unless I water it every day.

I have this one too! Seems you and I truly kindred orchid freaks!

I have mine on a slab and also in a special shabu shabu strainer. I will post in another thread. I don't want to hijack this one.

They are great little plants and look a bit like a Neofinetia! Not surprised you grow this as well. We do seem to share a grow list.

You really must post, in another thread, this shabu shabu strainer Velutinum! OMG!
