Miltonia Sunset

[Regelian]

Rather common in the stores around the holidays, Miltonia Sunset is an older Moir (1961) hybrid of M. regnellii x M. Goodale Moir that is enjoying a revival. Blooms as the growths mature, which means multiple flowering during the year.

I love that, great contrast between the colors! And a real Miltonia to boot as opposed to a mislabeled Miltoniopsis! Miltonias really are pretty great plants, is this hybrid fragrant?

No real fragrance, unfortunately, just a very light freshness.

I can't get Miltoniopsis to grow well for me. They really prefer very cool and moist climates.

Very nice. I note with interest your comment on Miltoniopisis: I have just started growing them and the plants appear to be liking the conditions: In fine bark kept moist with a controlled temp of min 14 degrees at night and 25 plus degrees during the day. They are in a double skinned hot room.

Hot room! LOL! Days have been over 35C here for some time and it isn't even hot yet.

No detraction from this bright beauty, but are you sure this is Miltonia Sunset?

To me it appears to be a different hybrid, one of the fairly uncommon hybrids that combine Miltonia and Miltoniopsis - and easily confused in name here - Milmiltonia (Mmt.) Sunset. It was registered in 2011 so it is much more likely to be commonly seen now, and quite likely to get mislabeled Miltonia since 90% of the time non-specialist growers, even professionals, don't make the distinction. One grandparent is the complex hybrid Miltoniopsis Bellingham, and the others are 3 different Miltonia species - Milt. regnellii, Milt. flavescens, and Milt. clowesii.

Those are the same 3 species that make up the true Miltonia Sunset, so there would be strong similiarities, but I think the very broad lip here with a touch of waterfall pattern may be showing the Miltoniopsis heritage. Most pictures found in a search for Miltonia Sunset appear to be the same hybrid pictured here, but in OrchidWiz the pictures of Milmiltonia Sunset match this, including an official award photo from Germany. OrchidWiz has no pictures of the older hybrid Miltonia Sunset.

Thanks for the comment. Already discussed on the 'other' forum and I am doing a bit of local investigation, as this looks to be the case. It may be that the original Miltonia Sunset is actually 'lost' and this 'Sunset' is very similar. Ready for some confusion? Stay tuned!
