Sharry Baby or Bartley Schwartz Highland?
Default Sharry Baby or Bartley Schwartz Highland?

Yesterday, I hauled in 4 new orchids. I could ID the other 3 on the nursery's website as they are identical. But the closest match to this one they had is called Miltonidium Bartley Schwartz "Highland", but I don't think it is. Mine is more brown than red and mine has bold lines. It is waxy appearance. Also very tiny yellow tips on the brown petals. I thought it might be a variant of sharry baby instead, any ideas? It's fragrant - warm and sweet scent. I would just email the nursery but they are not based in an English speaking country.

To me it doesn't look exactly like any of the Sharry Baby flowers either. Your petals seem more flat and broad than most of the pics in Orchid Wiz. It's pretty much impossible to positively ID Oncidium intergeneric hybrids as there are many that look similar. It is a huge group of plants that are hybridized a lot. And many of the hybrids are very variable so that one cross has many different looks. If it didn't have a tag or the grower didn't confirm the name, it shouldn't be named with a registered hybrid name. You can give it a different name of your own if you feel it must have one.

Looks almost like a Colmanara Wildcat of some sort, could be a Sharry Baby cross? Not sure.

Nope, neither name is correct, although it sort of resembles Sharry Baby. It is not.

It is not Wildcat.

I remember seeing something like this at a website last year. can't recall the name.
It had Sharry Baby as one parent if I remember correctly.

I'll get back to you once I find it again.

It is pretty and fragrance I'm sure is a killer! in a great way!

Could be Oncidium Heaven Scent 'Redolence' or one of the other clones. I had one in bloom (Orchid Society holiday freebie--gave it away as I do not have the space) and it was very fragrant and looked similar. It would be impossible to get a definite label for it as there are so many hybrids but it is very pretty.

Whatever it is, it's nice. What about the scent, detect any?

Yes, it has that chocolate/vanilla type scent that people speak of. It was amazing. I can't wait for a rebloom so I can smell that beautiful fragrance again!

It is working on a new pseudobulb now and was recently moved into semi-hydroponics. I put it in fine fir bark when I bought it but the bark degraded very quickly in the warm summer - it seems like a very thirsty plant and I watered 2-3 times per week during August.

I'm a bit worried about the decision to do semi-hydro as it's my first time but I figure trying S/H is the only way I will know if it's for me or not.
