I always find out where a plant comes from. I look up the climate there, and how it grows.
I went to the
Internet Orchid Species Photo Encyclopedia for this plant.
It's from low-medium elevations in tropical Bahía state, Brazil, but not on the coast. So it's pretty warm all year. The climate there has a drenchingly wet summer, and a dryish winter, but plants are not dry for weeks on end because there will be regular dew at night.
Further down the IOSPE page is this:
"Newer references give this species as a synonym of O cruciatum..."
So I went to O. cruciatum on IOSPE. It is an extremely widespread species, growing in different areas that are hot all year and cool all year, and everything in between. It grows in summer rainfall areas and winter rainfall areas.
So I would guess your O. gutfreundianum is fairly adaptable.
