NOID oncidium - repot or let it be?

everyone. Thank you for taking a look.

I've been taking care of this oncidium for few years and it's starting to grow at the very edge of the pot. Is it time to repot it in a bigger container? If so, when would be a good time? Another question that I have is; what can I do to keep older bulbs from dropping their leaves?

It was in a smaller container when I bought it from traders joe. When it outgrew it I split it in two and put it in it's current pot.

It looks like it could stand a larger pot. Especially if its been in the same media for a couple years. The best time is when you see new root growth. The new roots will adapt better to new media. Other than growing it as well as you can. I don't know if you can prevent leaf drop on old bulbs. Quite a few of my Oncidiums just do that.

I'll take your advise and repot it. Is it all right to repot while there is a baby plant is growing?

Yes, it should be fine. Can you see new root growth? If a plant really needs new media I don't wait but otherwise that's what I wait for.

As far as I can tell with my oncidiums (what I primarily grow), they will always lose leaves that are no longer capable of photosynthesizing nutrients to store in the pseudobulb. Eventually, the older, leafless pseudobulbs will shrivel into nothing. This just means they've served their purpose to the plant, and are no longer needed I'm not sure if the loss of leaves is a result of the pseudobulb shutting down, or if the leaves fall and THEN the pseudobulbs cease... But, it's just a part of the oncidium life cycle!

Now, if they are losing leaves off of pseudobulbs that you know are on the younger side of the spectrum (for example, a pseudobulb that is less than 1 year old and hasn't produced a spike), that's when you should be concerned...
