i have an odontocidium hans isler (pretty sure) that is spiking for the first time under metal halide. 3 spikes! is this too many? should i clip 1 or 2 or just let them all go?
also, once it blooms i would like to put on display in my cafe under just ambient regular lights. will this shorten flowering time or have any other negative effects??
If your orchid is healthy, then there is no need to cut anything - I say let it go nuts and enjoy the show.
I often place any blooming orchids under dimmer lights, you wanna keep the lighting heats away from the blossoms. Just make sure the leaves are getting some decent light too.
I never cut any spikes. Not on any plant I have. I have had some spikes just blast on their own and if you cut anything, how do you know which one would have blasted (if any)? Keep well alone and let the plant develope as it may - that's my advice.
I just purchased one (a hans isler), only has one spike ( haha) and is a few days away from blooming!
Did you find it easy to grow? what medium do you use?
i got mine back in june 07 and it only had one spike. the new spikes showed up almost a month ago. it has 5 pseudobulbs now so i guess its about 4 or 5 years old(?). i just use the schultz growing medium. Schultz :: Orchid Potting Mix - 20248
