Hi All, I've noticed that one of my Oncidiums has considerable side growth without any discernible presence of a bulb. Is this normal or is an inappropriate waste of the plant's energy?

The oncidiums that I have do not start producing pseudobulbs until the growth is mature, so I would say what you are seeing is normal.
