Reasons my boyfriend is a keeper! (valentine's day orchids)
The stars really did align for me today! Not only did my partner and I celebrate our one-year anniversary tonight (two days early), but he bought me some orchids from Trader Joe's today to spoil me.
We went to one TJ's near the restaurant we ate at and it had mostly phals and cyms, but then I said we should check out the one near home in case it had some more interesting ones. Boy did they have them there!
Lately I have really been wanting a pink miltoniopsis orchid, and I have been wanting a Beallara Lunatic Fringe "Ike's Yikes" since last fall, but I passed the one in the store up to save money.
Well BOTH were at the store (and I am probably going back there tomorrow because I think they had an oncidium twinkle or something very similar in bud), and they were each $13, and he bought me both of them.
Boy oh boy, I'm so happy today!
And to top it all off, the miltoniopsis has about 7 bulbs and both orchids have second spikes coming up so they will be in bloom for a LONG time!
Happy Valentine's Day, everyone, and if someone didn't spoil you, you should spoil yourself because you deserve it!
I am about to run out of space, oh my gosh!
EDIT: I may have found an ID for the pink miltoniopsis. It may be Miltoniopsis Emotion Angel 4n (Emoi x Nyasa), and the link to my more detailed post can be found here: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...tml#post733248

My first orchid was a gift from my husband last July, a Miltoniopsis. That plant had 9 spikes and covered in blooms, very deep red. They smell so sweet I just love them. My Miltoniopsis has almost doubled in size and I can't wait for it to bloom again. Looks like you had a nice Valentines Day! Yep, he's a keeper.

Congratulations on the new orchids! What is great about orchids is they stay in bloom much longer than cut flowers.

Yep!! And if we count the divisions I've made as separate plants, these two rounded off my collection to 20 orchids. Oh my!

That is how it happens...they slowly sneak into your collection and, one day, you will wake up and have more than you think you should have. :|

I'm not a fan of miltoniopsis, but I LOVE that beallara! Now I want to head down to TJ's, but I'm saving money/space for the Pacific Orchid Expo next week. Darn addicting orchids!

You know it!! And I haven't even started on dendrobiums and masdevallias yet- my next two interests. Oh dear. I really need to buy a new shelf to put them on if I get too many more, haha!

I know, they just grow new pseudobulbs and lay roots right down into your heart!! Haha, pink is my favorite color, so seeing a little funny mask on a miltoniopsis that is pink just makes me melt. I think the mask on this one looks like a little screaming child throwing a tantrum, so it makes me feel like this orchid is too sassy!
And this beallara is gorgeous and HUGE!! I think it has longer leaves than my odontocidium wildcat, and bulbs as big as my brassia. I think it is going to be my biggest plant once it has a year or two to pop out some new pbulbs. Gosh I love these flowers, too. I definitely recommend it. By the way, it has a sort of... peppery fragrance. Not too sweet or pleasant, but it is mild and tolerable so far.

Haha!! This Christmas, my boyfriend and I agreed to spend the exact same amount of money on each other (since we're poor college students) and he took it a step too far when he said, "Well how about I just buy my thing, but list it in my financial record saying that you bought it for me, and you buy yours!!"
"Eugene!! That is NOT gift-giving, that is buying a thing for yourself and we are at least going to pretend to be surprised by the other person's gifts!!"
But he didn't pick those out for me- he just told me to drive us to the store and pick out any orchid I wanted. <3
Oh married life- my friends are all getting married and having children on purpose and it is a strange thing indeed. I'll get married one of these days, too haha!
