New miltoniopsis orchids - SO MANY SPIKES!! Female

It does sound like a very nice climate! Told myself that if I were to move perhaps I'd move to the North-west coast.

Isn't it crazy what we do for these plants? Told my BF I was going to Orchid show he said, "Orchids are plants right? Am I missing something?" Not everyone gets the bug. Just means if he's not paying attention to them hopefully it takes a while before he noticed the already massive accumulation growing more and more...lol.

Good luck and growing!

Thanks for the reassurance. I was always scared of these, but now I think they should be easy and HOW rewarding when they are growing like little weeds and pumping out so many inflorescences!

PS How much do you think I should water in summer time if I'm watering twice per week in winter?
HAHAH "can't imagine accordion leaves happening to me" ...... I think only in a green house will these plants be safe from wrinkles. I run a humidifier and keep it at 50-55% . I find if I water mine more often the new growth looks great. the week I slack off I see it. Mine is fast growing but I think good light might be the cause of that. I have 5 new growths growing on my rescue Mailtonia. Mine loves the south facing window it's leafs are the perfect shade of green not dark but not too light . I can't wait to see what color mine is I bought it as a rescue super cheap after all blooms where long gone.

These are not your normal orchids where you can let them dry out. NEVER let these dry out! I Now water a little bit every other day. That seems to help and one BIG soak once a week.

You will not have a problem keeping them they are really hardy plants. I know I am happy with just one because they are a bit demanding.

I also find that the new growth is much more sensitive when the roots are just developing and hare still near the surface for the pot as the roots grow deeper into the pot they tend to get more moisture. This is just what I have seen in mine. The larger new growth gets less wrinkles .

Interesting thread! I just got a Miltonia from Safeway, and promptly left on a trip for a week. I did water all of my plants the morning I left and now I"m scared about what I'm going to find when I get home. I hope I didn't dry it to death! (I know the other orchids will be fine)

I couldn't help it. I felt the need for a new plant and kept trying to put it off, knowing the trip was coming up, and I just couldn't help it!

Its funny these plants can be fine without water for awhile it's only when they are in active growth the new growth gets wrinkles old mature leafs will not wrinkle or unwrinkle .

Your plant will be fine if it's in bloom. It's just keeping the new growth from wrinkling is hard.

Thanks for that tidbit! Yes, it is in bloom. There are a couple of flowers that have opened and the rest are in bud. Of course, if it does suffer from bud blast, I'll happily take it and repot it into something that doesn't look like dirt.
