Miltoniopsis. To wet or to dry ? Male
Default Miltoniopsis. To wet or to dry ?

I have a couple pansy orchids that repotted. I have been watering cans feeding on a consistent basis. I repotted them in a commercial medium that had a bit more finer consistency that their original potting. I did this as it gets hot and very dry here in summer. They have new growth but the leaves are pleated. I can't figure out if they are too wet or to dry. I check the potting medium with a skewer and a moisture meter and no not water unless they are starting to get slightly dry. I have some leaves yellowing and falling off. Wondering if it's to much fertilizer but I make a weak mix. Would love some opinions on what I can try next.

Too wet is the biggest killer of Miltoniopsis. Moist mix yes. The mix could be the problem, what sort of mix is it & what size plant & pot.

it's not really the "wet" that does it, but in too fine of a mix, water can fill the voids and suffocate the roots, and THAT they don't take too well.

Check the roots. Take a photo of them. Post the pic.

I suspect root damage.

Pleated leaves doesn't necessarily mean they're not getting enough water. It could also mean that a lot of the roots got damaged, and the plant is not getting enough water to grow right.

Always check the roots.

Also be aware of the pot size.

I recommend using a clear plastic pot so you can see what's going on with the roots. The roots are photosynthetic, btw, they can use light to supply more energy for the plant.

I also don't know what you mean by "finer commercial mix". Please post a photo of your plant in the mix.

Miltoniopsis are epiphytes of mid to high elevation forests that stay consistently moist year round. The branches they grow on are almost always covered in mats of lush growths of living moss.

The roots do like good air circulation too. Make sure the pot's got quite a bit of drain holes or slots. Water shouldn't sit in there at all.

A humidity of 50% is ok for them, they don't need to be at 90% the whole time.

If it dries out within 1 day, water twice a day. Do not be lazy and sit the pot in standing water. That is a pretty quick death sentence for these guys.

If I did this correctly there will be three photos attached. I re-potted these two plants in a mixture that is finer than what I bought them in. By finer I mean smaller particles mixed with medium sized bark. I would say its almost to fine. It is a Miracle Gro potting product for orchids. It does hold the moisture quite awhile as I don't have to water them but about once every two weeks. They do seem to be improving in their appearance. Perhaps they are still re-cooping from the shock of transplanting.
