I use bamboo skewers in my orchid pots / media to help determine when to water. Miltoniopsis like media to remain a lightly moist, tho not soggy. Moderately bright light.

I have a few oncidiums and one miltoniopsis. I grow in s/h. Except for the burr. Nelly isler I got, all have transitioned easily to s/h. It's easy for me to keep them cool because my office is freezing. I have them in a big east facing window, and it's cold. But the milt I have really took off. It has some wrinkled leaves, but it has a new spike and it never sulked. Maybe try an inorganic medium? I live in Boston, btw, so not too much different from you.

Default Watering maybe ?

If they are rotting, my thoughts immediately go to keeping them too wet. Media needs to be free draining so it stays damp, but not wet. Also good air movement.
