Psychopsis Mendenhall "Hildos", potted or mounted? Male
Default Psychopsis Mendenhall "Hildos", potted or mounted?

A new acquisition. The plant is lovely, amazing, I really admire the incredible foliage (both sides). It´s a young plant, not flowered yet, but I´m thinking if due my hot and warm climate it would be better if I mounted it. I have read that the big problem with this plant is the risk with the roots, where the problems begin. It´s hanging outdoors and for example, this afternoon we have a monsoonic rain. Here we can have daily rainings. It's growing in fir bark.

Meanwhile I`m thinking to do more holes in the pot, take care with waterings and wait for new growths and roots and then decide. I don't want to disturb it now that it's "knowing" its new home and climate.

Any advice?

THANKS!!

Mario

I have mine potted. It gets lots of light and I keep a saucer of water under it that only occasionally dries out.

Thanks for your lines!!! Now is outdoors under shade cloth with cattleyas, no prob with light, my only concern is about watering. I keep an eye checking to wait that the bark dries and then I watering. I hope that I´m doing the right thing. We will see...

As long as you have monsoons every afternoon, you won't need to have it sitting in water. I do because I do not have great humidity and we are going into winter now. It is in the green house where humidity is better. Good luck with it. They are gorgeous.

THANKS!!!

I´m watering one day yes and the next no. Now is very very hot here and it´s starting to have full sun in the morning. I'm still checking how it would be the best schedule for it. I did many holes, now the pot when I water it is like a shower head!!! :-)

INDEEEED it's a gorgeous plant. I like it a lot. Thanks for your good wishes.

Mario

I have one, and also grow it potted. Mine is in a net pot with bark, which sits inside a slightly larger plastic pot (to keep humidity around the roots for longer). Potted is what is better in my conditions though, I don't keep anything mounted

As to what you should do with yours, how do you grow your other orchids? If mounting is something that works well for you and your conditions, it could be an option. Pyschopsis hate to be disturbed though, so once you've picked your method, it's better to stick with it.

I absolutely love my plant! When I got mine (Psychopsis Butterfuly) it was about the same size as yours. It bloomed off the next new growth, with the spike appearing about 2-3 months after the bulb matured. Every year it produces a new growth and spike, and the previous spikes just keep blooming and blooming. So soon my plant will have 4 spikes blooming together! I'm thinking about getting a second Psychopsis, since I'm so successfuly with this one.
