Default Onc. Sharry Baby 'Velvet Maroon'

Oncidium Sharry Baby 'Velvet Maroon'

Purchased on eBay from seller shermantp.

Arrived in spike, with the first flowers already open.

One simply cannot be a member of Orchid Board and not read, time and time again, about how wonderfully fragrant the Sharry Baby hybrids are. Unfortunately—and I don't know if it's because of the shock from shipping, the cultivar, or what—this one doesn't seem to have that powerful of a scent. I was expecting to smell the thing from across the room, but I can only get a hint of fragrance if I put my nose right up to the flowers, even in the bright light of midday.

Hopefully that will improve. If not, maybe someone will trade me a division of their 'Sweet Fragrance' cultivar for a division of this one

While not overwhelmingly fragrant, the flowers are still lovely, especially the pink-and-white lip that seems to be a bit different on each one.

It takes a few days for the scent to get strong. I don't usually notice a scent until somewhere between 3-5 days after blooms open.

Same here. The scent gets stronger the warmer it is.

I just got the same orchid from the same seller. Mine only has one spike tho and is just beginning to open so I have to put my nose right up to it to smell anything. Can't wait til it opens more. Your plant is gorgeous! I also recently bought a 'sweet fragrance' and a 'red fantasy' both in spike but I think it'll be awhile before either of them bloom because they haven't started budding out yet. Can't wait to compare the scents and slight differences in blooms.

Thats great judith! I'm looking forward to your report as well! There doesn't seem to be a lot of info online about the scents of the different Sharry Babies.
