The spikes will bow as the blooms start. Depending upon how long the spikes are and how many blooms, they may hang down a lot, which can present problems when moving the plant for watering, and possibly with where the plant may be growing.
My Sharry Baby gets very long spikes, heavily branched, with a ton of flowers. If not staked, it's very hard to manage everything, and when it was in a smaller pot (5"), the plant always toppled over when spike wasn't staked.
I use "short" (12-18") ring stakes - they hold the spikes up a bit, but still allow for the lovely bowing for most of the spike length.
