I was hoping to see a deep red lower petals on this one comparing to the picture in the website i bought it from. It looks more of a genting orange than a volcano. Happy anyways. cute little thing!

I love the sunset colours. It seems these are vary variable in how they look. I had one that bloomed completely different colours depending whether it was warm or cool when it was developing buds and blooming. I thought I had tagged the plant wrong until months later it re-bloomed from the same spike a completely different colour. By then it was spring and the greenhouse was reaching temps in the 80's during the day.

it had one flower when i got it and the flower looks the same. I thought that it was washed out cause the flower was wilting. So higher temps mean deeper color or the other way around? I was keeping it in a slightly cooler area and I was waiting for the spike cause the new growth was already mature and then I moved it in a warmer area and it spiked within a week and then I moved it back to the cooler area but no difference in the color of the flowers. I heard about tolumnia's crazy variation when it comes to their progeny.

The first photo was taken on Jan 5 and the 2nd one was taken on March 9. The 2nd one is a rebloom on the same spike as the first. The 2nd bloom looks more like the blooms when I bought it a year earlier, but not exactly the same either. So I assume the seller likely bloomed it fairly warm and my paler colours were from a cool greenhouse in mid winter.

that's interesting. Maybe I will try keeping it on the warm side and wait for the rebloom to see if the red color appears. I'm planning on hanging it outside when it gets really warm.

Good luck, hope you get the red colour. It is interesting to see such a difference. I have heard some orchids get a deeper colour when bloomed cool. This is the opposite on mine and such a difference. I really thought it was a different plant. And yes, they certainly seem to vary in their progeny also. But they are cute little things with any colour of blooms!

So I was looking at other pictures of genting volcano on this board and variations are all over but there are some that looks similar to mine. I read that light intensity plays a part in coloration. I'm up for experimenting. and oh.. it has a spicy scent too!
