That's good to know. I was worried about it getting enough water the way I was told to "water" it. (Just misting once a day)

Tolumnia are native to the Caribbean Islands like Puerto Rico, Jamaica, Cuba, and southern Florida. They live in bright sunny places in trees and schrubs. They live in breezy, humid air--which usually comes early in the day, blown dry through out the day, dry by sundown. During rainy days, rain drenches everything but short lived (unless a hurricane comes through).
These plants are very popular in northern states like mine--Indiana, because southern Florida and the Caribbean are favorite destinations and they make great souvenirs of winter vacations held in these bright, WARM geography. So I try as best as I can to emulate these conditions here in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

This is only my second mounted orchid, so hopefully he lasts for me. I did hear that this guy prefers to stay quite dry relative to other orchids and that if the humidity is high enough he really only needs misting once every 3 or 4 days. Anyone else familiar with growing mounted Tolumnias dry-ish?

Noooo!!! Never ever dry them out whoever said that!
Pretty much any orchids on the mount dry out too fast unless you grow them in greenhouse where they can enjoy high humidity and frequent misting and watering on a daily basis ( ok, more like hourly basis in certain case).
If you grow these at home (or any mounted orchids) you have to dunk it in a buck at least once a day, and I'm not talking about just one second and out, but let the plant really drink up, especially when in active growth.

Beautiful! Love these and I grow quite a few!
I agree that perhaps the watering instructions you were given might be a tad off. I've had some great success with mine given all of the factors, while others that live near me can only kill them.
My understanding is that they want to be watered in the morning and completely dry by nightfall. As such, everyone I have bought came in a clay pot with some moss and bark in it. As soon as spring comes around and new root growth is seen and sufficient, I get rid of all the moss and bark, then sit it in a clay pot without any medium. So basically, bare root although the clay pot holds some moisture from watering but is always dry by nightfall.
Given how I grow them, they get watered every day. Sure, I miss a day here or there, but I try to avoid that whenever possible. I take them outside during the summer and when it get to be over 100F I water them sometimes twice or thrice a day!

However, everyone's growing conditions are different and everyone produces mixed results. Mounted orchids can be a bit more tricky and time consuming than potted for sure though.
I went back and looked at your pictures. Is there any moss around the base where it attaches to the mount? I would just make sure any moss and the mount is dry by nightfall, but be sure to water every morning if it is dry.
I think "humidity high enough" might mean 80% or higher given where they reside. Not sure. However, for me the typical house humidity is around 50% or less. I could see needing to water less if the humidity was indeed very high, but for most of us without a dedicated environment to have high humidity levels, that's pretty much impossible year round, lol...
I hope we haven't confused or frustrated you though... Please feel free to ask any questions or air concerns. We would love to help out and address those concerns to the best of our abilities.
