What kind of pot to repot in? Female
Question What kind of pot to repot in?

I have a few large oncs, one that is currently profusely blooming, but both are in these green non-slitted plastic pots. I have mostly phals, in S/H, so really don't have any idea about oncs needs around the type of pot, (how much aeration is needed), and size. Forgive me if this isn't cool to post this in this forum. The one onc. I have that is no longer flowered has lots of new root growth (bright green tips) but there really isn't a ton of roots all out of the pot. The pot IS bulging on the sides, and the new roots are popping up amongst the pseudo bulbs, but not a ton growing out the bottom holes yet. DO I need to repot now? And what kind of container? Do oncs need lots of aeration?

I pot my oncidiums in nursery style pots in a medium sized bark that has some perlite and charcoal mixed in. They like to be pretty tight in their pots, so you shouldn't have to repot unless the roots are crawling over the sides of the pot that it's currently in. If the roots aren't spilling out of the pot, I'd leave it alone. Got some pics? That might be helpful.

As far as I'm concerned, all orchids need it airy at the roots.

I also find oncidiums take really well to S/H culture, if you time it right.

I have Onc potted in both plastic orchid pots, and plastic azalea pots. Chc mix - tho have used small fir bark mix. I have had problems with medium bark when repotting - very diffucult to remove the bigger bark chips from those fine roots.

Onc are generally epiphytes, so well draining mix is recommended.

The ones with smaller roots are prone to root rot so definitely need excellent drainage and good air flow. Also any time you re-pot or change media you will likely lose some roots as they get acquainted to the new medium, also root breakage and accidents. I have mine in small chips of red lava with no filler, with a little fine orchid mix just at the growing ring to keep that a little more humid for longer. They seem to like this choice. They are also in well arieated pots. One is in a ceramic pot and the other is in a plastic pot.

My oncidiums are potted in plastic pots with slits on the side; holes in the bottom. I use LECA ( small size, since the roots are thin. ) Since they do have P-bulbs, I let them dry between waterings BettyE
