Cochlioda noezliana
This species is from the Andes and is used in many Oncidium alliance crosses. I got it in spike in San Francisco Orchids in the Park.

Plant without spikes is under a foot tall.

Here's a cool time lapse video of someone else's opening.

Wonderful color. I like this species and genus. Unfortunately, I have to admire them from afar because they and their hybrids don't tend to hold up so well in warmer conditions.

Thanks. I love the intense color too. My microclimate is even warmer than the original growers. I know I won't kill it, but not sure if I can get it to re-bloom. I might be having an Andes orchids sale in the next couple of years--this and the Masdevalias. I'm in a borderline area for growing these.

Thanks, I'll see how it does here. I do get some 90F days. I think it would love San Francisco. 80F was "hot" when I lived there.

Just wondering if anyone out there had some experience with its tolerance for California warm conditions, I'm trying to get a feel if these drop dead with the slightest heat or if they persist til the autumn.

I have had one of these die on me, but that was before I switched to RO water which has helped a lot of things. I'll probably try again. But I know that Andy's Orchids grows it (shade house, so ambient weather) and it survives the occasional hot days. Still, a coastal climate, relatively cool nights.

Thanks Roberta, appreciate the response. I may hold off given your experience.
Incidentally I've been using an RO system specifically for my paphs but was told by a nursery that not using tap water may be linked to my fungus trouble, due to the fluoride and additives being present in tap water. Experience is invaluable else I just keep guessing.
